Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Bells will be ringing

Calling all volunteers. Salvation Army Bell Ringers are needed at Kimball's Main Street Market from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday beginning Friday, Dec. 4 and ending Dec. 19.

The Red Kettle Christmas campaign, the Salvation Army's most prominent fund-raiser, first started in 1891 in San Francisco, according to the organization's website.

This fund-raiser allows the Salvation Army to provide meals, toys and clothing to more than 6 million people during the Christmas season as well as assist more than 34 million Americans nationwide throughout the year.

Families, businesses and individuals can volunteer to help for a one-hour shift or more each season. Funds raised provide assistance to local residents in need throughout the year.

According to Pastor Carla Gunn, more vounteers are needed for this service. The event was originally planned to begin November 27, but due to a lack of interested parties, the date was moved back a week.

Currently, several churches and the Cub Scouts are assisting, but everyone in the community is encouraged and invited to help.

"Though many churches are involved they probably, like my own church, have an average age or nearly 75," Gunn said. "Some of them could not even sit to ring a bell for an hour. We really would like to see more bell ringers."
