Nancy Jo (Hickman) Hoffmann

Nancy Jo (Hickman) Hoffmann

Nancy Jo (Hickman) Hoffmann, 71, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, in North Platte.

Nancy was born March 7, 1944, to Ellis and Carol (Prine) Hickman in Kimball. She was the oldest of three children, including a brother, Roger, and a sister, Anita. She was raised on a farm near Bushnell and attended school in Bushnell and at a country school. She graduated from Kimball High School in 1962.

Nancy attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and obtained her bachelor's degree in food and nutrition in 1966. She obtained her registered dietitian licensure at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., then worked as a hospital dietitian at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She moved back to Lincoln and obtained her master's degree in food science from UNL while working for the Nebraska Dairy Council. She also developed the Nebraska statewide exam for dietary managers, which is still used today.

Nancy married Jim Hoffmann on Oct. 24, 1975, in Norfolk. They lived in Norfolk and eastern Colorado before moving to a ranch 15 miles northwest of Mullen in 1980, where they lived for 28 years. Nancy and Jim had two children - a daughter, Nicole, and a son, Michael. Nancy taught nutrition classes at Mid-Plains Community College for many years. The family moved to Mullen in 2008. Nancy's health began to fail, and she was a resident of Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home for almost four years before her death.

Nancy had a brilliant mind and took pride in her work as a dietitian. She enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. She also loved to read, and remembered nearly everything she read. She enjoyed being a part of the Mullen community, volunteering as a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader and Red Cross Bloodmobile co-coordinator. Above all, Nancy's family was her pride and joy.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Ellis; mother, Carol; in-laws, Victor and Frances Hoffmann; sister-in-law, Helen Kroeger; and brother-in-law, Jim Kroeger.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Nicole; and son, Michael, all of Mullen; sister, Anita (Don) Theophilus of Norfolk; brother, Roger (Marilyn) Hickman of Pendleton, Ore .; brother-in-law, Tom (Jeannette) Hoffmann of Nenzel; nephews, Brandon (Heather) Theophilus of Traverse City, Mich., Drew (Kim) Theophilus of Omaha, Brock Theophilus of Omaha, Doug (Shirley) Kroeger of Cody, and Tom (Stephanie) Hoffmann of Lincoln; nieces, Dawn Hickman of Boise, Idaho, Donna Ohori of Omaha, Mary Beth (Dave) Fergus of Seattle, Wash., and Jennifer (Lealand) Schoon of White River, S.D .; and numerous friends and loved ones.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 5-7 p.m. at the Mullen Funeral Home, with family present to greet the public.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the United Methodist Church in Mullen, with lunch and fellowship to follow. Burial will be at approximately 3:30 p.m. MDT at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nenzel. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial scholarship fund has been established in Nancy's name. Memorials are also suggested to Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home and Mullen Ambulance.
