Longhorns drop 36-28 game at Southern Valley

The Kimball Longhorn football team came back from an early deficit but ultimately fell at the Southern Valley Eagles, 36-28, last Friday night.

"We've been having a lot of ups and downs in the last two games," said head football coach Nick Kuxhausen. "We just need to be more consistent and have a more consistent team. We have a lot of young guys on the team that need experience, we have a lot of positives about our team.

"Our varsity is getting a lot better. We really played hard all four quarters. We have a strong foundation that we are going to build on and close the gaps. We really dominated the second quarter and we can do a lot better. We'll be working hard on that. Like I said before, we just need more consistency."

The Eagles (1-1) scored twice in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. Kimball roared back in the second quarter with three touchdowns for a 20-14 lead at halftime.

Southern Valley came back for a 28-20 lead in the third quarter, and each team tacked on eight points in the final quarter.

Kimball ended the game with a total of 66 plays. The Horns had 15 first downs and committed five penalties, which cost them 45 yards on the night. They led the time of possession with 26:50 to the Eagles' 21:10.

Offensively for the Horns, Tyler Magninie was 14 of 26 passing for 190 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Jaden Withrow was 1-for-1 passing for a 24-yard touchdown.

Ethan Land led the way receiving with six catches for 124 yards and a score. Angel Flores caught three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown, while Trent Rutledge hat two receptions for 36 yards and a score and Logan Stahla had two receptions for 13 yards. Zane Anthony caught a pass for four yards, while Withrow caught one pass for two yards.

Withrow led the ground attack with 21 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Creg Barker led the team with eight tackles, while Kyle Spicer added six. Derrick Soto, Land, Rutledge and Withrow each had four tackles for the Longhorns. Sam Tussing and Cody Kirby also chipped in with three stops each.

Spicer led the team with three tackles for a loss, while Rutledge had two. The Longhorns had eight tackles for a loss as a team against Southern Valley.

Withrow caused a pair of fumbles and Barker caused one. Magninie recovered a pair of fumbles, while Land and Kirby each recovered one.

Kimball will play at home Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. against Mitchell.
