Potter-Dix boys, girls take second at MAC meet

Potter-Dix took second place in both the boys and girls standings in the Minuteman Activities Conference track meet held Saturday in Bayard.

The host school topped P-D in the closest of margins in the boys standings, winning with 127 points to the Coyotes' 126 points. The girls race was also neck-and-neck with Bayard posting 118 points to win, while P-D was next with 110 points.

The Coyotes won seven events and finished second in four additional events. They were led by Kelsey Rozelle, who picked up two first place finishes and two second place finishes. Rozelle won the high jump with a height of 6-01, besting Tyler Hoke of Minatare by three inches. He also took the top spot in the long jump with a leap of 21-02.5. Rozelle and Garden County's Ryan Smith battled for the top two spots in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. Rozelle had the best time in the preliminary in both events, but Smith edged him in the finals in both times. Smith won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.91 seconds to Rozelle's 12.04 seconds, and also edged Rozelle 24.07 to 24.39 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

Cameron Purcell took the top spot in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.07, edging out teammate Jake Johnson, who finished second with a time of 2:08.58. Johnson came back to take the top spot in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:07.03.

Coby Hicks won the pole vault with ease, with a vault of 12-06. He bested South Platte's Julius Dickmander by a foot.

The Coyotes also won a pair of relay events. The team of Cooper Hicks, Johnson, Samuel Bogert and Purcell took the top spot in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:43.06. Leyton finished second in 3:35.52. The Coyotes easily picked up the win in the 4x800 meter relay. The team of Johnson, Bogert, Purcell and Cooper Hicks won with a time of 8:51.03. Bayard took second in 9:29.41.

Cooper Hicks added a pair of second place finishes in running events. He took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.43, less than two seconds behind Ryan Smith of Garden County, who won. He also finished second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.39 seconds, just over a second behind the winner, Bryce Hargens of Bayard.

Alexus Rozelle's stellar day in the throws led the Lady Coyotes on Saturday. She easily won the discus with a toss of 114-11, while Courtney Leach of Garden County took second with a toss of 99-04. She won the shot put with a throw of 36-08.50, topping Banner County's MaKenna Dahlgrin, who took second with a throw of 33-01.5.

The Lady Coyote 4x800 meter relay squad also took the top spot on Saturday. The team of Ryley Hicks, Presley Christensen, Trinity Langley and Regyn Hicks won with a time of 11:37.22. Bayard was second, finishing with a time of 11:55.59. The Lady Coyotes also had a strong performance in the 4x400 meter relay, finishing second to Leyton. The team of Payge Hoffman, Savannah Shaw, Christensen and Regyn Hicks finished in 4:42.63, just over four seconds out of first place.

In running events, Hope Shepard took second in the 800 meter run in 1:04.59, only five seconds behind Jessi Smith of Bayard. Regyn Hicks finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:43.49, while Leyton's Kaitlyn Berner won the event in 2:33.53. In the long distances, Ryley Hicks took second in the 3200 meter run in 14:53. Bayard's Nicole Baker won the event in 13:58.12.

Also for the Lady Coyotes, Payton Franklin took second in the pole vault at 8-06. Teammate Ryley Hicks finished fourth in the event, also with a vault of 8-06.
