Greenwood wins dual conference golf titles

What a weekend for the Kimball High Boys Golf Team and especially for sophomore Jordan Greenwood. Greenwood won back-to-back conference medalist titles on back-to-back days of competition and also shot his career low round of golf in winning the Western Trails Conference individual championship.

The Longhorns travelled to Grant on Friday of this past week for the South Platte Valley Athletic Association tournament finishing runnerup to Bridgeport for the team honors as the Bulldogs shot 339 and Kimball 349. Behind the top two were Perkins County 352, Chase County 359, Sutherland 380, North Platte St. Pats 381, and Hershey 412.

Greenwood took medalist honors with his round of 37-38=75, 4 strokes ahead of Bridgeport's Eric Stevens with his 79. Kimball senior Michael Ferguson also made the top ten medal group with his round of 45-41=86 to finish 8th. Andrew McCloud shot a good round of 46-46=92, Kyle Spicer shot 48-48=96, and Kole Bush 42-55=97 as all five Kimball golfers shot under 100 for the first time this season! It was also the low team score of the season as coach Chad Wise has his team of young golfers headed in the right direction.

Greenwood followed up his win at Grant with his best competitive round of golf ever the following day on Saturday at Crawford, site of this year's Western Trails Conference tournament, exploding for an under par round of 36-33=69 to win his third consecutive tournament and fourth win of the year, and has now medaled in every tournament the Horns have played in. His round of 69 was 10 strokes better than second place, a 79 shot by Jacob Horstman of Hemingford. His outstanding round led Kimball to a team victory as well, as the Horns once again shot 349 to equal their season low of the day prior, and for the first time this season they won out over Bridgeport who finished runnerup with 368. Other team scores saw Gordon-Rushville at 390, Hemingford 391, and Mitchell 437.

Kimball had four golfers in the top ten medal group at the WTC Tournament with Kyle Spicer 5th with his round of 89, Michael Ferguson 9th at 95, and Kole Bush 10th at 96. Andrew McCloud shot 101. An overall outstanding performance by the Kimball boys and coming at a good time as the season is fast drawing to a close with only two tournaments remaining on the schedule before the district tournament. Kimball will host their own Kimball Invite today (Thursday) with tee time at 9 a.m. On Monday, May 11, they are scheduled to go to Bridgeport for a make up tournament that was postponed from an earlier date due to bad weather. The district, and state qualifying tournament, will be held at Cambridge on May 19, also with a 9 a.m. start time, according to the school calendar. This could change to individual tee times as the format at most district tournament play.

Coach Chad Wise of course was quite pleased with the play of his young team over the past week and said they will continue to work hard. "Kole Bush and Andrew McCloud are so close to playing in the 80s. They both have had a couple of bad holes that kept them from doing that this past week. We are getting there," said Wise.
