Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Top BOOK IT! readers in the country

Three groups of Mary Lynch Elementary School students placed in the top 100 nationally for the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! reading program.

The combined sixth grade classes of Jamie Murdoch and Bernie Walker finished 21st nationally in the contest. Laurie Janicek's fifth grade class finished 34th nationally, and Carma Weisbrook's fifth grade class finished 85th nationally. In addition to the three Kimball classes, the fifth grade class of Lanelle Stumf in North Platte finished 45th nationally. Stumf is Janicek's daughter and a Kimball native. Those four classes are the only classes in the state to be nationally ranked in the competition.

The Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program runs October through March each school year. Students track the amount of books and time they read, which is now easier through the use of an app. They students try to reach a certain goal set for them.

The program began in 1984 and its aim is to inspire children to read every day. The total number of minutes logged by the app alone this year was more than 46 million.
