Kimball claims overall championship at Chappell meet

Kimball won the overall team championship at the Tri-State Track and Field Invite this past Friday in Chappell, thanks to a first place by the Kimball girls team and a runnerup finish by the Kimball boys team. In the final results sheets no team scores were included, or the listings of how teams finished in order.

It was a delightful day for track and field at Chappell and the athletes responded, especially the Kimball athletes, with many personal bests for the season, and many Kimball athletes may have written their names onto the elite group of athletes who will compete in the upcoming Best of the West meet coming up April 28 at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff.

The Longhorns had several winners on the day including Trent Rutledge in the pole vault at 12'4" and Jaden Withrow in the triple jump at 42'0" leaving this duo at a perfect four wins in four times out. Like they have every meet all season, the Horns scored big in the jumps once again as Justin Mohr was 3rd in the vault at 11'6" and Jaden Mohr 5th at 9'6." Jon Withrow joined his brother in the place winners of the triple jump taking 6th place at 37'4.75".

Ali Hunsaker was 2nd in the girls vault at 7'6." The Biesecker sisters went 2-3 in the long jump with Hannah 2nd at 14'10.5" and Madison 3rd at 14'6.75." Jannel Fiehtner was 3rd in the triple jump at 30' ll.25" and Taylor Walker-Muldoon was just one quarter of an inch out of a 6th place medal with her jump of 29' .75". Tyler Magninie equaled his season best in the high jump clearing 5'10" to pick up 3rd place points for the boys. Colton Stull was held out of the long jump because of an eye injury he suffered and the fear of getting sand in the eye.

A good day in the weights for Kimball, especially for senior Jessica Hanks who had season bests in both the shot and discus. She was 3rd in the shotput at 33'0" and 2nd in the discus at 102'6.50." Danika Daum also had a good day with a 6th in the shot at 31'8" and a 5th in the discus at 91'4." Ben Sauter also had a season best in the discus finishing 5th at 119'8."

In the hurdle events Justin Mohr ran 5th in the 110 meter highs with a time of 18.00 edging out team mate Trent Rutledge who was 6th in 18.20. Justin tied for 6th in the 300 hurdles running 46.9. Madison Biesecker was 3rd in the girls 300 hurdles with her time of 53.8.

On the track, a gold medal performance by Colton Stull in the 100 meter dash with a winning time of 11.8. Jaden Withrow ran the same time as the 6th place finisher in the finals of 12.20 but was given 7th place. Madison Biesecker was 3rd in the girls 100 meters in 13.9 with Hannah Biesecker 5th in 14.0. Ali Hunsaker broke the tape in the girls 200 meters to win the gold in a time of 28.10. Jon Withrow looked very strong in the boys 200 finishing 3rd with a time of 24.0.

Ryan Muneio had a good day as he won the 400 meters in 53.3 and ran 2nd in the 800 in 2:11.50. Ali Hunsaker picked up yet another medal in the 400 finishing 3rd in 1:06.40. One of the highlights of the day for Kimball was sophomore AJ Williams win in the 1600 with a winning time of 5:12.90, six seconds better than second place. Freshman Kaden Adrian ran 6th in 5:34.90 and both of these young men show great promise in the event. Kaden and AJ joined with Jaden Mohr and Ryan Soper to run 3rd in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:00.30.

Kimball's 4x100 relay team of Ryan Muneio, Jaden Withrow, Jon Withrow, and Colton Stull won out with a winning time of 46.30 and at last report they were still leading the state in Class C-2. Kimball also put together a good girls 4x400 relay that ran 2nd in 4:36.20. Team members were Ali Hunsaker, Jannel Fiehtner, Hannah Biesecker, and Madison Biesecker.

After their good showing at Chappell climaxed by a team picture when it was announced that Kimball had won the combined team championship, the Longhorns now ready for the Western Trails Conference meet coming up this Saturday at Bayard with a 1 p.m. start time listed on the school calendar.

Coach Gene Mohr was happy with the performances at Chappell. "We had a lot of kids run their personal bests and I think some of their marks might get them into the Best in the West. Now we are looking for another good day at Bayard this Saturday."
