Spring Sports Special: Lewis looks to improve as Coyotes' lone golfer

The Lone Ranger golfs again.

For the second straight year, Austin Lewis will be the lone member of the Potter-Dix boys golf squad. Lewis, a junior, is in his third year golfing for the Coyotes.

Coach Kevin Thomas said one goal for this year is helping Lewis to shoot under 100, and hopes to see him improve in each area of the game.

"There's room for improvement everywhere, across the board," Thomas said. "Hopefully I can get him where he can shoot under 100. He's gotten better since he was a freshman."

Thomas said there is a full schedule lined up, but he is not sure how many tournaments Lewis will play in. That number will be up to Lewis, he said. Lewis played in one tournament last year.

Last Wednesday was just the second practice for Lewis, due to weather or other commitments. They practice the Prairie Pines Golf Course in Potter, in addition to other courses.

"It's great to do that out here," Thomas said. "Some night we go to Kimball or Sidney, but that takes quite a while. A couple three hours to get there and back and play. So we want to get a little bit of the rust off, if you will, before we head out there."

Ideally, Thomas hopes to practice five times a week.

As Lewis gears up for a potential first tournament in April, Thomas hopes to see improvement this year.

"Hopefully we improve every year. I think we'll be a little better," Thomas said.
