Kimball boys fall to Perkins in SPVA play

The Kimball boys wound up 6th in the 8 school SPVA Conference Basketball Tournament losing 69-43 to Bridgeport in first round play as reported last week, and then falling 45-42 to Perkins County in losers bracket play on Saturday at North Platte.

The Horns won over Perkins County at Kimball back in December by a score of 61-52, but this past weekend they were without the services of a couple of their regulars including senior starter Enrique Cajero who elected to make a college visit trip, and one of their top scorers in Tyler Magninie who was sitting out for an infraction of school policy.

Perkins County led from start to finish but the Horns stayed close and were in position to capture a win right to the bitter end. After falling behind 8-0, Michael Ferguson got Kimball on the board with a rebound put-back and scored 5 first quarter points. Kimball was outscored 14-5 in the second quarter to trail 29-15 at half time, but came back strong in the third period to out score the boys from Grant 18-5 and were down 34-33 entering the final period where they were outscored 11-9.

Colton Stull was Kimball's only player in double figures with 11. Ferguson had 9 points along with 6 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Ethan Land hit a pair of treys and had 8 points. Jordan Greenwood seemed to spark the team every time he checked in and wound up with 5 points, 5 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Jon Withrow had 7 points with 5 rebounds, and Trent Rutledge had 2 points along with 4 rebounds and a block.

In team stats Kimball had 14 turnovers, 19 fouls, was 7/13 at the line, 13/31 on 2 point field goals, 3/23 on 3 pointers, had 7 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds, 11 steals, 6 assists, and 2 blocks.

Perkins County had 32 rebounds, 19 fouls, was 13/24 at the foul line, 10/36 on 2 point field goals and 4/13 on 3 pointers. Josh Johnston with 3 treys and 15 points led their scoring with Charles Johnson in double figures with 12.

Kimball's record dropped to 5-9 with two games on tap this weekend including a trip to Sutherland Friday night with the JV games set for 3:30 and boys varsity to tip off at 6:30. On Saturday they will host North Platte St. Pats, the SPVA champions who won out over Bridgeport in the title game 42-32.
