Strong start lifts Lady Coyotes past Lady Wildcats

Potter-Dix used its strong press and rolled out to an 11-0 first quarter lead en route to a 43-15 win last Saturday at Banner County.

"The press helped us create some turnovers and get some early baskets. We will count on our press all season to ignite our offense," Potter-Dix coach Jeff Einspahr said.

Alexus Rozelle started the scoring with a layup, with an assist to Audrey Juelfs, and Anna McLaughlin added a layup to make it a 4-0 game. The Lady Coyotes (2-0) expanded their lead with a strong spurt by Dawson Sharman. Sharman took Juelfs' pass from the top of the key to underneath the basket for a layup, and drilled a 3-pointer from the corner on an inbounds play to make it a 9-0 game. Her third straight basket, a jumper with 2:44 left in the opening quarter, extended the Potter-Dix lead to 11-0.

Banner County (0-2) found the scoring column with eight seconds left in the opening quarter on an Ashlynne Hanan jumper to make it an 11-2 game.

Hanan opened the second quarter with a jumper, but baskets from Sharman and Juelfs pushed the Potter-Dix lead to 15-4. Taylor Evans cut the lead back to single digits with a layup, after she picked up the rebound on the other end, drove down the court and sank the shot.

Juelfs' layup on a putback put the Lady Coyotes ahead by double digits again at 17-6, and added a trey from the top of the key on an inbounds play for a 20-6 advantage with 2:24 left in the first half. Potter-Dix led by double digits the rest of the game.

A Sharman putback layup and a free throw from Trinity Langley put the Lady Coyotes up 23-6. Hanan ended the half with a basket for Banner County as the halftime score was set at 23-8.

Potter-Dix put the game away for good early in the third quarter. The Lady Coyotes opened the second half with a 12-0 run.

Sharman led the Lady Coyotes offensively with 15 points, while Juelfs added 12. Evans had a team-high eight points for the Lady Wildcats.

Einspahr was pleased with his team's 2-0 start to the season.

"Starting off with a win over a good Sedgwick County team Friday night and then to go into Banner County and win a big conference game was huge," Einspahr said. "We are very happy to start the season with two big wins and give our young team some confidence for two tough games this week."
