Potter Days

Annual celebration draws quite the crowd to Potter downtown area

The village of Potter held their annual celebration this past weekend.

Potter residents, as well as members of the surrounding communities, gathered in the streets to celebrate their community. The theme for this year's Potter Days was "Potter, A Toy Story".

The celebration kicked off on Thursday evening with the crowning of the Potter Days Miss Potter. This year's Miss Potter was Donica Enevoldsen. The Miss Potter Days Attendants were Miss Regyn Hicks, and Cortney Lewis.

On Friday, children's activities were held downtown. Several children spent time drawing with chalk on the sidewalk outside Potter State Bank. The first of the two Legion Shows was Friday evening, after which was a fireworks show and free movie. That night wrapped up with a free dance with entertainment provided by DJ Zzone.

Of course, Saturday kicked off bright and early with a Fun Run and Youth Center Stand breakfast. The museum was open and then at 10 a.m. residents lined the street to watch the Potter Days Parade.

On point with the theme, several of the floats were decorated to reflect the spirit of the great Disney Pixar film, "Toy Story". There were army men spraying down the crowd with water, a Buzz Lightyear comically strapped to the front of their vehicle. Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy made an appearance to pass out candy to children. The children were most excited for the candy, which almost every float was throwing into the street for the kids to pick up. Children of all ages stood on the street, grocery sacks in hands picking up the candy that was being graciously tossed from floats that depicted the theme of the day as well as local businesses.

The parade ended around 11 a.m., and residents trickled through the streets to make their way to the free barbecue at the park.

The day fleshed out with some friendly competitions such as a lawnmower races, duck races, and free drawings. The Legion show was put on one last time after which a street dance was held at the South Side of Bag's Bar and Steakhouse.

All in attendance were pleased with the weekend's festivities. Nothing but excitement and compliments about the day's activities could be heard throughout the crowds.

The parade floats were separated into different categories and then awarded a first second, third, fourth, and fifth place. In the churches and religious groups category, St. Paul's in Potter received first place. In the business category, fifth place was awarded to Kimball Health Services Potter Health Clinic, fourth place was Point of Rocks, third place Potter State Bank, second place Collective Gathering and first place was McConnell Auction. In the Organizations/Clubs category, fourth place was awarded to the Lions Club, third to PCI, second to American Legion, and first to the Historical Foundation. Kids Groups or singles had fourth place awarded to the Johnson Family, third place to the Kasten family, second place to the Slama family, and first place to Potter/Dix Early Learning Facility. The last category was the miscellaneous category where in Mo and Deanna Horst received second place and the lawn mower races received first.
