Farmer's Day Committee readies for annual celebration

Farmer’s Day is a celebration of the community that is anticipated throughout the year. This year Farmer’s Day will be held September 26, 27 and 28.

Farmer’s Day may only happen over a three-day span, but it takes much longer to prepare for the events that the community looks forward to every year. Assunta Calise, the lead chairman of the Farmer’s Day Committee, confirmed that the committee started meeting all the way back in January.

“We had our first meeting in January and we had them once a month to touch base and make sure everyone was doing okay with their portion of the planning and then as we get closer to Farmer’s Day we increase the meeting frequency to twice a month,” Calise said.

Calise also said that, while she is the lead chair of the committee, it’s a group effort, and she’s there in order to keep things organized.

“I am lead chair. This is my first year so I hope I am doing a good job. I mostly just make sure people are doing okay with their specific activities they are planning and provide help if and where it’s needed,” Calise said.

Calise and the committee have been hard at work to bring back familiar activities as well as some new ones. Things like the hamburger feed, soup supper, and salsa tasting will all be returning this year.

“We’ll have the greased pole, craft fair, and parade. The melodrama is happening again this year and it’s called ‘Superhero Sanitarium’. That will all be happening this year. If people are interested in the craft fair, they can talk to Dorothy Griffith. If they are interested in the parade ,they can get a hold of Sandy Dominguez,” Calise said.

Some new things in store for Kimball’s Farmer’s Day celebrations include the movie night, lawn mower races, and even the block party. There will be something for attendees of all ages to participate in.

“We’re going to be doing a movie night at Gotte Park, and we’ll also have a live band and beer garden happening downtown that same night. Right next to Good Times will be where we are going to hold our block party. We’re hoping that it provides the adults with some entertainment,” Calise said.

The block party will include a beer garden that people will have to get a wrist band for after their I.D. has been checked. For those with children or those who don’t want to drink, the other option is the movie in the park. While the movie itself has not been decided yet, it is said it will be a more recent family-friendly film. Popcorn along with other snacks and beverages will be sold at the park for the movie goers.

“We’re really trying to make it so everyone has something to do. It’s Kimball’s big yearly event, and we want to make sure that people have fun, no matter their age,” Calise said.

Friday will be the day of the soup supper, salsa tasting, melodrama, craft fair, cruise night, and then the movie in the park and the block party.

Saturday will begin with the Panhadle Coop pancake feed, fun run, and craft fair. All the aforementioned will take place before the parade and classic car and truck show. Several activities and games are in store for the attendees before and after the hamburger feed. The community theater will put on a second performance of “Superhero Sanitarium” that evening.

Sunday will host the air show and horse shoe tournament. The theater group will deliver their encore performance that day as well.

“As of right now the demolition derby is sort of up in the air. We don’t know whether or not it will be happening. I know a lot of people want to stay updated on the schedules for Farmer’s Day, and the best way to do that is to like the Facebook page, Kimball Farmer’s Day. We will be posting updates and more accurate schedules once we get closer to Farmer’s Day,” Calise said.

All the most current updates will be posted to their Facebook page as September 26, 27 and 28 draw ever nearer.
