Members of the Bushnell Lions Club hosted test screening for hearing and vision at Kimball Jr./Sr. High School Monday, August 25. The screenings led by Steve Bennett, driver/operator/manager of the Mobile Screening Unit, and sponsored by the Lions Club International Foundation is used as a way to help schools identify problems that elementary students and high school students may be facing in the classroom and throughout their learning that are hard for teachers to identify, according to Bennett.
"The results here, well, for everybody but for the school children, they go to the nurse and then the nurse has to keep record. She's mandated by state regulation to do this so this helps her out. What we can do in one day could take her a month or more or the entire school year of works. And we can do it in one day and get things done. From there, if they have what we call a 'referral', if they have two 20/40s or a 20/50 and above, that's a referral. And she gives information to the parents and the parents go from there. And with hearing as well, we can identify things that teachers don't even know are happening," Bennett said.
Before the screening process, Bennett trained each of the members of the Bushnell Lions Club, and it is the hope of the group that the information gathered will serve as a benefit to local students.
