Kimball wrestlers win Mitchell triangular

A great start for the 2013 Kimball High Wrestling Team as they picked up wins over Mitchell (39-30), and Morrill (42-18) in the season opening matches at the Mitchell Triangular this past week. It’s been a long time, if ever, a Kimball team has won this triangular competition and Kimball coach Wade Brashear was pleased, to say the least.

“We had some kids really perform well for the season opener and we will continue to get better as we work on our conditioning” Brashear said. All three schools were wrestling short on numbers which brought about several forfeits and some open weight classes. Because of some minor injuries, Kimball had only 9 wrestlers compete at Mitchell, but Brashear was high with praise with the efforts of his Longhorns.

“Ruger Lewis was wrestling up a weight class from where he will be and beat a senior in his first match with Morrill. Logan Stahla, just a freshman, wrestled very well despite losing to a returning state qualifier. Rowdy Keller had a real tough match but did well and needs to keep working hard to get in top condition. Anthony Scott, another freshman, wrestling in his first match ever is really going to be a good wrestler. Here is a kid who has never wrestled in Federation or junior high or any other form of wrestling, but is showing great promise” Brashear said.

Kyle Spicer, another freshman, sat this one out with a minor injury but is expected back this week hopefully. “Winning this dual was big for our program and we will build on this win,” said Brashear.

In the win over Morrill, Javier Figueroa at 170, Damien Rutledge at 220, Eric Escajeda at 285, Rowdy Keller at 113, Logan Stahla at 126, and Justin Mohr at 132, all won by forfeit. Colt Lewis at 145 pinned Alex Knouse in 3:51 while Ruger Lewis at 152 lost by pin in 1:49 to Garrett Zwiebel, and Anthony Scott at 106 lost by pin in 4:17 to Justus Peterson. Jackson Carpenter of Morrill won by forfeit at 160 and both teams were open in four weight classes.

In the win over Mitchell, Javier Figueroa at 170 pinned Marquis Droddy in 1:29, Rowdy Keller at 113 won 8-7 over Darryn Walters, Justin Mohr at 132 pinned Zachariah Sanabria in 1:47, and Ruger Lewis at 152 pinned Devon Williamson in 3:34. Logan Stahla lost by pin to Drew Gilliland in 4:57 at 126 pounds, and Colt Lewis at 145 lost by pin to Cody Mueller in 3:29. Mitchell won three matches by forfeit and both teams were open at 195 and 138.

The Longhorns will be back in action Saturday at the Banner County Tournament where coach Brashear said “We will have more matches for all of our kids as all of the weight classes will have wrestlers. I am anxious to see Damien (Rutledge) get some mat action, and anxious to get Kyle Spicer back on the mats. Wrestling is to begin at 9:30 on Saturday in Harrisburg.
