Banner County News, Notes & Nonsense

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. What a busy week last week was--Music students at Chadron, District FFA at Gordon, and District wrestling at Sutherland…Not to mention basketball.

As these particular sports seasons are starting to wind down we find everyone pumped up and more than one parent taking a deep breath. A little more rest is in the near future. As for the events that I just mentioned, however: Mrs. Sandy Wounded Arrow, music instructor, said that the young ladies that attended High Plains Music in Chadron recently performed very well and had an excellent time! The weather was decent too, so that was a plus.

Mr. Gifford FFA leader and instructor traveled to Gordon for District competition with several FFA members and they did very well. Kaden Huber placed 16th out of 77 competitors in the Vet Science portion; the Farm & Ranch Management team placed 4th with members Haliegh White, Tyson Dahlgrin, Brenton Soule, Dalle Rutledge, and Reagan Streeks. In this division Haliegh White placed 3rd in individual competition. The Envirothon team which includes Garrett Grubbs, Cole Carey, Ashlynne Hanan, Paige Cross, and Taryn Lackey finished 1st at Gordon and 2nd overall in in the Western Region.

Envirothon is a contest put on by the NRDs and is open to anyone, not just FFA.

The wrestling team that competed in districts had three qualify for state competition. Headed to state is Gared Krakow, David Gifford and T.J .Grubbs. I do believe State competition is at Omaha this week. This group is also coached by Mr. Bill Gifford. Congratulations to each of you on a job well done! A special ‘Thank You’ to teachers and coaches.

On the basketball court, the girls varsity basketball team is competing this week in Mitchell. It is subdistrict time. We wish you the best of luck and safe travel.

On the South side of the building, the annual Spelling Bee was held in the big gym on Wednesday February 13. Students K-8 competed at 12:30 p.m. and I hope you were able to come and watch.

The elementary kids will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 15, at 2:40 p.m. Parents and others interested are invited to these also. Speech team members will be on the road Saturday, February 16 to Ogallala and boys varsity basketball subdistrict play will begin Monday, February 18-22. Good luck and safe travel to all of you involved with these future activities.

There will be a Central Banner 4-H Club meeting on Sunday, February 17, at the school in the cafeteria. The meeting will start at 4:30 p.m. and anyone who was 8 years old by January 1 of this year is eligible to join.

There will be a ‘Beginning Knitting’ class for anyone interested on Tuesday, February 19. It will be held at the home of Vicki Grubbs and will begin at 9 a.m.

The Driver’s Exam will be available at the Banner County Courthouse on Wednesday, February 20; everyone needing their services is invited to this one also!

Saving the best for last (in my humble opinion) there will be NO SCHOOL for STUDENTS Monday-Wednesday, February 18-20. Monday the teachers will have an ESU13- in-service day; Tuesday and Wednesday they will have curriculum workdays.

Birthdays this sweetheart week include: Eric Zimmerman, Rylee McGowan, Roger Morris, Heston Soule, Charity May, Lyndon Grubbs, Rita Stauffer, Brittany Cooper, Ken Boston, Hannah Brown, Tom Wayman, John Jones, Matt McGowan, and Jennifer Havengar. Happy Birthday!

Sweetheart couples include Mr. and Mrs. Tom Neal, Ron Barrett, and Denny DeNovellis. Happy Anniversary!

The Midwest Theater will have the group “Bearfoot” (correct spelling!) on line for Thursday, February 14. This talented group is winners of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival competition and will perform at 7:30 p.m. Following them Friday and Saturday, the movie “L’es Miserables will be shown at 7:30 p.m. and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Also, the 31st annual IMAGE exhibit continues at the West Nebraska Arts Center. Currently 37 artists form Nebraska and Wyoming are being featured. This exhibit will continue through February 24.

Usually after Christmas when all of the decorations are taken down and put away, the house seems bare. So for several years I have been collecting snowmen to put out in January. OK, so we had so temps in the near 50s that month. So I put them away and brought out the Valentine’s. Now it looks like December/January out my window!

The moisture is great and we will take it no matter what month it decides to come, right? Hopefully this frigid weather will kill off some of the bad bugs too, and we will all feel better.

The sinus stuff and whatever else is going around sure seems to get a good hold on to you and stay. Hope all of you who are fighting anything are well soon!

Welcome back to the “Land of you–just-never-know” what weather will be next to Marvin and Barb Thompson who have spent several months in New Mexico. This will be quite a change for Slick!

Have a great week everyone, and until next time take care. Call me at 436-7152, 641-1335, or write to [email protected].
