Banner County News, Notes & Nonsense

This past week has been pretty busy and aren’t they all this time of year?

Students ended the week, some of them anyway by holding a 4-H meeting right after school in the cafeteria. Seven girls went over sewing machine mechanism recognition and then were introduced to a new sewing project by Lisa Brenner. They had a great time for a couple of hours and plan on meeting again next year to continue!

The newly formed Banner County Booster Club also met that night and helped prepare the gym for the Banner County Wrestling Invite which took place Saturday. I stopped in for a little while on my way to town and the gym was filled. Period. There may have been a dozen empty seats, but if the people milling about and sitting on the floor would have sat down, you would have needed way more than that. With 14 schools competing in several weight brackets, it was a crazy, fun place to be. I went by about 6 p.m. and the parking lot was still full. I did not hear how we placed, but it was sure nice to be there, even for a little while. It brought back a lot of memories of when I was a wrestlers’ mom!

Speaking of being a mom, isn’t it great to be a grandma? Or grandpa? Here awhile back I was sitting in the living room talking on the phone with a friend of mine, while my six year old granddaughter colored away at the kitchen table. She evidently did not know that I was on the phone. I was to learn later that she pulled her mom aside as she was walking by and said “uh, mom…I think Grandma is losing it, she’s’ been talking to herself for a really long time!”

If she only knew.

Friday, December 14, the Wildcats will host basketball at home against Leyton. Game time is 3:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15, the basketball game to be played with Creek Valley will begin at 2 p.m. on their home site. On the 15th, Saturday, the varsity wrestlers will have traveled the previous day to Sutherland for an invite there. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. Good luck and safe travel to each of you!

On Sunday, the Harrisburg Community Church will be around town to sing some of your favorite Christmas carols. Following the caroling the group will enjoy hot chili back at the church.

On Tuesday, December 18 the Banner County students, K-12 vocal and band will perform their annual Christmas concert. The fun will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to last for about an hour.

The following day the Driver’s Examiner will be at the Banner County Courthouse. He will be there strictly for his own pleasure since no one that I know really enjoys doing this. He/she will be on duty from 9-11:30 a. m.

Thursday and Friday, December 20-21 there will be the Holiday Tournament in Sioux County. The Wildcats will play Crawford. The girls will play at 2 p.m. and the boys will play at 3:45 p.m. Meantime, in the gym on Thursday, December 20, the elementary students will be enjoying a movie. I’m pretty sure the popcorn is out though. Also, on the 20th the wrestlers will be traveling to compete in the Western Trails Conference. I do not know the time, or place so please call the school at 436-5262.

Friday, December 21 School will be dismissed EARLY. The bell will ring at 12:20, the gates will open, and in eight seconds they will be loaded on the buses and headed your way! Get ready.

Before all of that happens, the elementary students will travel to the valley to entertain some of the elderly with their Christmas carol singing. Safe travel, good luck, and have fun to you all!

Say, are you aware that one of our Banner County students is also a writer? You may be more aware than I. Recently I was glancing through the Gering Courier, and here was a smiling face that looked pretty familiar. Adrianne Bazan is a Junior at our school is currently writing a bi-monthly article for this paper. I enjoyed her last one, and will be looking for future work, hope you will check it out!

Birthday folks this week include: Arlene Rider, Scott Delcamp, Marie Hein, Tiffani Anderson, Coral Richards, Mark Anderson, and Kathy VanPelt. Happy Birthday!!!

Couples celebrating an anniversary are Mr. and Mrs., Joel Cross and Glenn Muhr. Congratulations!

Well folks, that is it for now, so until next time take care and please send notes and news to 436-7152, 641-1335, or e-mail to [email protected]. Nonsense is welcome too, but I usually have plenty of that myself!

Have a great week.
