The Wildcats started strong in their game against the Potter-Dix Coyotes on December 1 at their home court with Ashlynne Hannan driving down the along the baseline and scoring amid the Coyotes’ defense and again finding herself wide open for a layup on the next possession giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead with 6:43 to go in the first quarter.
However, The Coyotes soon gained an advantage through a drive to the hoop by Kaidee Livingstone and a three pointer sunk by Taylor Juelfs, putting the Coyotes up 5-4.
The Wildcats were plagued with the same problems that had affected the Coyotes in their game against the Sedgwick County Cougars the previous night committing their first foul within the first ten seconds of the game with 8 fouls committed in the first quarter giving the Coyotes the ability to spread their lead from the free throw line.
The Coyotes really started to pull away in the third quarter with Juelfs hitting a three from the corner putting their lead to 13 points with the score at 22-9. The Coyotes defense kept the Wildcats to only 5 points in the quarter while scoring 17--and avoiding the over aggressive play and fouls of the previous game.
“We talked about what we did wrong the night before, the reach fouls and not moving our feet on defense. We tried to clean that up a little bit,” said Coyotes Head Coach Jeff Einspahr.
Things only got harder for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter when four of their starters fouled out.
“We got in foul trouble, and we had to sub down. We have very little experience, and we’re pretty much starting over with the five starters of the championship team that we lost, and the ones that we do have really haven’t played that much. We just really got to work on our shooting and decision making,” Wildcats Head Coach Brittany Cooper said.
In the end, the Coyotes ended up beating the Wildcats 53-19, starting off their seasons with back to back wins.
“We still got a lot of things to work on in practice, but it feels good to say that we have a 2-0 right now,” said Dakota Ramsey of the Coyotes.
