All of the local High School sports for the Fall season are over with exception of volleyball and the Kimball High Lady Longhorns will move into sub-district tournament play on Monday at Scottsbluff, but at the time of this writing, the pairings had not been determined. Our District play is at Scottsbluff High School on Monday and Tuesday. However, the winter sports starts this Saturday, Oct. 27, with junior high wrestling at Harrisburg with a 9 a.m. start time, and then on Tuesday, Oct. 30, Kimball will host a junior high wrestling tournament...

The Farmer’s Day Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed, volunteered, participated and enjoyed all the events last weekend. We hope everyone liked having more events downtown and the gorgeous weather this year! Without the City’s support it would not be possible for Kimball to have such a great celebration. There are many volunteers whose donation of time and resources make Farmer’s Day epic. It would be a large list to thank them all individually and we would run the risk of forgetting someone. The key ingredient to makin...

I would like to say Thank You to everyone who voted for me in the primary election for City Council. I feel when you are elected to serve in office you need to be able to commit 100%. Due to unforeseen health reasons, I have withdrawn my name from the general election ballot. I would like to thank you all again and I look forward to serving you in the future. Don’t forget to vote Nov 6! Respectfully, Stephanie Pedersen...

Some good happenings for Kimball High athletes and their fans. The football team got that big win they have been needing so badly. The cross country team had some really great efforts from their kids. The girl’s golf team had their best team performance up at Mitchell shooting their best team score, and the volleyball team finished second at the Gordon Tournament. Keep up the good work Longhorns! --------------- Of special note, freshman runner Chantel malson, almost set a new freshman record at the Kimball Invitational cross country meet. S...

Dear Editor: Our public school system is the heart and soul of our community. Not only are we providing the tools for all students to have productive and successful lives, but everyone benefits from an educated citizenry. Educational attainment is strongly linked to economic growth and development in our local communities, state and nation. So I am very concerned about the lack of funding from our state for public education in Kimball. Nebraska ranks 49th in the nation in state support of education. All of the surrounding states, which include...

I’m writing in response to last week’s very disappointing “Sherriff’s corner” in which you allowed a full 1/3 of a page for a political rant. Since you chose not to include a disclaimer, one can only assume that the Observer endorses the sheriffs’s opinions. First, Mr. Gillway’s unsubstantiated claim that the victims of the Parkland school shooting were paid by the “left wing media” is both unfortunate and demonstrably false. A simple search on any fact checking site disproves that story. Rather than spreading debunked conspiracy theori...

As President of the Nebraska Library Association, I was pleased to see the Kimball Public Library described as “a social center of the community” on Thursday, Aug. 16. I think it is great that the community recognizes the treasure that it has in its midst as Library Director Jan Sears and her team’s ability to win grants and develop partnerships to provide vital resources and services are exceptional. I only wish more library directors in the state (and the nation, for that matter) would look more to Kimball to see a model of what a 21st centu...

Just prior to our recent move to Gering, my husband was trying to move a truck on a car dolly and as he was attempting to take the trailer to air up the tire, the entire tire fell off. A local gentleman, Clay McDowall, assisted my husband and the very next weekend he took time out of his day to take our truck and trailer to our new home in Gering. His hard work and willingness to help complete strangers restored our faith in mankind. As we were moving, while in Scottsbluff, I had just left WalMart and another stranger gained my attention to...

Come rain or shine, the Teammates Golf Tournament was determined to go on, and it did, complete with rain and shine. With a 1 p.m. start time, following lunch and registration, the rules were told to the golfers and Greg Robinson said we are getting you off a bit early, hoping we can beat the forecasted rain, but that didn’t happen. The rain came down in sheets with most golfers still about 5 holes from being done. After a 30 to 40 minute rain delay, the word went out to return to your holes remaining and GET ‘ER DONE! A total of 17 fou...

This writing is in response to the John and Suny Moore ‘Letter to the Editor’ dated June 7, 2018. I feel that there should be clarification regarding the directing of the program this year, as opposed to all the prior years. First of all, it was not a VFW Service. It was a county program, planned and directed by a county employee, our Veteran’s Service Officer. In years past, the program has been organized and directed by the Veterans of Foreign War and the Auxiliary. The Memorial Day Services we presented were not meant to be for entertainment...

Anyone with a computer or a smart phone can google “dog parks” and explore the pros and cons. You can ask the opinions of veterinarians such as myself, dog psychologists, and other animal care experts as to the advantages and disadvantages of dog parks. When asked to write a letter about dog parks I decided to interview people who use them on a regular basis. They are the real experts. My daughter Kelly who lives in Fort Collins started taking her dog Lucy to parks when Lucy was four months old. Both of them love the whole dog park exp...

I enjoyed an All Star Basketball Saturday evening giving me one more opportunity to watch some of our immediate area All Star girls in action, including Kimball’s Hannah Biesecker, who had an All Star performance hitting 4 treys and scoring in double figures with 12 points. She also did a good job of rebounding, but her Green Team got whomped 108-81 by the All Star Orange Team. Jori Peters of Mitchell, a member of the winning Orange Team, was chosen MVP. She will continue her basketball career at Chadron State. Other members of the Orange T...

The 2018 Nebraska State Track Meet is now history and we had some outstanding performances from our immediate area of athletes who made the trip. You can catch those results in another story in today’s observer Sports. Unfortunately, as you read this week’s Observer, the State Golf Tournament will also be history, but our deadline for our weekly paper is Tuesday and that was the first day of the tournament which concluded on Wednesday. We will give you our report, and our version of how our awesome Kimball Team did next week. I can tell you tha...

It’s District competition time. The Kimball High Track Team will be at District in Sutherland today (Thursday), with a start time of 10 a.m. Mountain Time. Two of the Longhorn tracksters will be looking for return trips to the State meet in Omaha May 18-19. Brady Kilgore finished 5th at State last year as a sophomore and senior, Hannah Biesecker, is a veteran at the State meet in the long jump. The Horns have other athletes who have a chance as well. Good Luck Kimball. District boy’s golf is Tuesday and you fans won’t have to travel far as Ki...

The weather is still playing havoc with our area sports schedules and our Kimball High Track athletes had their meet at Morrill cancelled this past Saturday because of the winter-type storm that rolled into the area. Now, a select few that made the list for the Best of the West meet held this past Tuesday at Scottsbluff, will get some action and the entire squad will go to Sidney tomorrow (Friday) for the SPVA conference meet that starts at 9 a.m. The Junior High tracksters will be at Burns tomorrow (Friday). ---------------...

A slow week of activities for the local sports teams due to weather postponements or cancellations. This week should get busy. The High School track team did not go to Grant this past Saturday due to the stormy weather, but are scheduled to compete at the Western Trails Conference meet in Morrill this Saturday with a 1 p.m. start time. The Kimball Junior High track team got the season underway at Bayard this past Monday and was scheduled to compete in the Potter-Dix Junior High Invite being held at Kimball this past Wednesday. Let me begin by saying that I prefer to write about the fun events, the good news and the easy-to-read features of small town life. I do not enjoy writing negative articles about anyone or anything, nor do others in this job position. Regardless of who you are or what you’ve done, and no matter what I personally think of you, this is the job and it will be done, no ifs, ands, or buts. A reporter’s job is to communicate facts to the public in an accurate and fair report, even if it is something people aren’t happy to read. We use many sourc...

  • Letter to the Editor - Kimball displays ongoing support of community events

    Jan 18, 2018

I moved to Kimball in the fall of 1979 and right from the start, I learned how generous and how supportive the Kimball community is of Kimball High School programs. During my first year in Kimball as a member of the marching band, we had to go out into the community and raise money for our trip to Calgary, Canada. Of course we were able to accomplish this goal and experienced the trip of a lifetime. Not only I have I experienced the generosity of the Kimball community as a student, but also as an instructor. The 2018 Senior Class has been...

  • Letter to the Editor - Representing Nebraska well

We’re passers-through from Fort Morgan, Colorado who were done a huge favor recently by a Kimball resident and two others with local connections. We’d like to publically thank them. During a recent storm, my wife and I got stuck in a ditch. After trying hard to get out, we called the nearby Kimball Municipal Airport. Ed Nelson answered and showed how much he cares by offering to call local contacts for us, and offered to help us himself if they were unable to help, despite being a considerable distance away. The first person Ed called was Ric...

  • What makes the holiday season special to you?

    Dakota Kuhns|Nov 16, 2017

Holidays are just around the corner. Wow, I can’t believe how fast this year has gone, seems like it was just a month or so ago that we were celebrating New Years Eve. But no matter how fast or slow this year seems to have gone by for you, it is almost Thanksgiving! Our team here at the office has been talking about this for the past few weeks and we want to hear more about our readers’ traditions. What are some of your family traditions, something new you want to try, and, of course, what do you enjoy most about it? My family, now being mar...

I would like to thank you for the Friends & Neighbors article from your November 2nd edition that recognized my good friend and “twin brother” (although from different mothers) Mr. Ed Avila. Since the day in September 1966 that Ed stood up in 7th grade vocal class and volunteered to be a friend and guide at school to the new kid from Cortez we have remained close friends and I have seen his devotion to Kimball and its young people. Ed’s work with all of the young men who participated in Kimball boxing throughout the years provided a fathe...

Beloved basketball player, “inventor of the Jump Shot”, coach and great hardworking man, was honored last Friday night at the Arena-Auditorium on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie. Kenny Sailors was actually born in Bushnell, on Jan. 14, 1921. I have tried all my sources to find out where about it Bushnell, but no luck. Anyway, Sailors grew up on a farm near Hillsdale, Wyo., where he began shooting the “Jump Shot” while playing with his older and much taller brother. This is where the “inventor of the Jump Shot” came into play. Back...
