  • City Sees No Spark In Electric Car Deal

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 20, 2012

After a long discussion over the past few meetings, the Board of Public Works has decided not to apply city funds toward acquiring an electric car for the city of Kimball in their meeting December 11. The decision not to move forward with the electric car for Kimball comes from uncertainty pertaining to how it could be put to use to benefit the city. “I think it is the right thing. I just wish I felt more confident that it was something we could really use,” Chairperson Jim Cederburg said. City Administrator Harold Farrar had applied for a...

  • Board Adopts Landlord Deposit Policy

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 20, 2012

The Board of Public Works voted to adopt a resolution that will change the landlord deposit policy for utilities in the city of Kimball. The new policy will change the previous policy for landlords from paying a $100 dollar utility deposit per rental unit to a $200 floating ceiling deposit for all rental properties contained in one location. Under the previous policy landlords would have to pay a $100 deposit for each residential rental property without a limit on the cost to the landlord. As stated on the resolution itself, the purpose of the...

  • Tis The Season

    Dec 20, 2012

“So this is Christmas, and what have you done?” The first line of John Lennon’s famous holiday song reminds us that the season calls for a personal account of our efforts to aid community and humanity. Another year is ending, he reminds us, and a new one—with a new set of needs—awaits just a few days away. Kimball and the surrounding area faces many challenges: economic growth, low income families, an aging population, homes and buildings in disrepair. Of course, most many parts of the world share in these. But we believe the resident...

  • The Boogey Man And Christmas

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 20, 2012

I’ve had some clever ideas in my time. For instance, it once occurred to me that figure skating would reap a much larger television market share if patches of thin ice were hidden around the rink. Just imagine the potential for excitement: “She’s attempting a double axel with a—uh oh! Her chance at a gold medal just disappeared into freezing water.” Similar logic could be applied to other lagging small screen genres. Imagine women’s daytime talk shows hosted by those guys from Duck Dynasty or morning news panels demanding nuanced,...

  • Drought Conditions

    Mike Johanns, U.S. Senate|Dec 20, 2012

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. This phrase from a popular Christmas song has never before been sung with such sincerity and intensity as it is this year across Nebraska. With more than 96 percent of Nebraska suffering from extreme or exceptional drought, we desperately need the moisture.  Farmers and ranchers have been battling severe drought conditions across the entire state, in what has become one of the driest and hottest spells on record. Drought conditions extend to more than 60 percent of the contiguous United States and have be...

  • Problems With The EPA Way?

Tessa Shaw, Kimball High Ag Student|Dec 20, 2012

Over the course of the past few years, we have seen the Environmental Protection Agency become prevalent in agriculture. The EPA is a government program that was established to protect human health and the environment, although, some believe they have become overbearing. The EPA has produced many acts dealing with agriculture. All of these acts have requirements, many of which require monetary action to conform to. In addition to the current acts, in a recent USDA Agricultural Air Quality Task Force meeting, an outline of new regulations was pr...

  • Strengthening Rural Hospitals

    Adrian Smith, U.S. Representative|Dec 20, 2012

I have the honor of representing Nebraska’s Third District, which is one of the largest and most rural districts in the country. I love rural America, but oftentimes Congress and bureaucratic agencies in Washington make decisions without fully considering how laws, rules and regulations will affect rural populations differently from other Americans.   For example, rural Americans tend to have greater challenges accessing quality health care because hospitals and physicians are more concentrated in urban areas. To see a specialist, rural...

  • Do You Believe That Our Children Are Safe In Schools

  • Banner County News, Notes & Nonsense

    Barb Cross, Correspondent|Dec 20, 2012

Good Morning to each of you here in Banner County and to all of our friends and neighbors near and far. Here is hoping that you are all ready for the Christmas holiday. I am not completely, but I am getting closer. Guess that is a great thing since the 25th is only a few days away. Our college kids will be home and many other family members will be also, and that in its self will be a lot to be grateful for. Last week the Wildcats hosted Leyton in four basketball games, traveled to Creek Valley the next day, and now they will compete in the...

  • The Last Surrendering Sioux

    Tim Nolting, Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

In the pre-dawn hour of December 15, 1890, a squadron of more than twenty Indian Police roughly wakened Sitting Bull. Rudely escorted from his home, not even allowed the dignity to cover his naked body, Sitting Bull protested his unwarranted arrest. Careless, though passionate, shots were fired in defense of Sitting Bull and the fearful tribal police responded by killing the great Sioux Chief with one bullet in his back, one bullet in his head. While he lay in the spreading pool of blood, his home was searched and a young man was found still...

  • Moustache Safety

    Baxter Black, Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

Moustaches have become de rigueur in certain lifestyle choices; mountain men, Arctic explorers, Fu Man Chu-ists, carnival acts like the bearded lady and cowboy poets. As we know, if something becomes popular, the government soon tries to get involved. A word about moustache safety and maintenance; HAPHAZARD!  There are really no official rules, no regulations passed down by the Department of Sanitation or Landscaping or Aerodynamics. But I suppose one might encounter moustache restrictions for certain jobs like wine tasting, orthodontry, or...

  • Home Country

    Slim Randles, Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

When Pop Walker sneaked out the kitchen door the other day, it affected all of us. He’s been a resident of the Rest of Your Life retirement home for several years now. He still remembers who said what during combat in Europe, but has a hard time remembering if he’s had breakfast. The call went out down at the Sheriff’s office around 10 p.m. that Pop had slipped through the enemy lines, meaning the kitchen staff, and was on the loose. One of the deputies called Doc, who was a friend of his since forever, and Doc alerted the rest of us. Pop...

  • No Till Notes

    Mark Watson, Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

In the past couple of articles I’ve talked about how we have added diversity into our cropping rotations to diversify markets and improve soil health. We have added field peas into our dry land cropping rotation which has allowed us to diversify our herbicide rotations, improve and diversify our soil microbial populations, and add a legume in our crop rotation for nitrogen fixation. Our crop rotation is now winter wheat, followed by corn, then field peas and back to winter wheat. I also talked about the possibility of adding forages as part o...
