In the wake of a series of regional drought conferences with farmers, ranchers, business owners and other stakeholders, USDA is entering into a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Commerce, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), to improve sharing of data and expertise, monitoring networks, and drought forecasting efforts. The MOU is a direct outcome of the regional conferences. In recent months, USDA has partnered with local governments, colleges, state and federal partners to conduct a series of...
The South Platte Natural Resources District received a clean bill of health in its financial practices, according to the annual audit results presented to the board of directors at the District’s December board meeting. The Kimball Health Services Employee of the Year for 2012 is Dr. Trevor Bush. Amid enthusiastic applause, Bush received his award at Saturday’s hospital Christmas party and employee appreciation dinner. His name was chosen by the hospital’s Employee Outreach Committee from among all employee of the month award winners in 2012. Bush was the KHS Employee of the Month in December. He was nominated by two employees, the first of whose nomination read, “ Dr. Bush has amazing doctor patient relationships,” wrote nurse Lori Cleveland. “He went abov...
Kim Baliman received recognition and thanks at her last meeting as Council President at the City Council meeting on December 4. “You’ve done a lot for us here on the board, also for the community. You’ve helped chair several of our clean up projects where we’ve got the citizenship really involved along with the Keep Kimball Beautiful project that we do each Spring. That has really been a success in my mind,” Mayor James Schnell said. Baliman received a gift for her service to the council, and even in her final moments sitting on the council,...

(Reviews Resume In January 3 Issue) Every year as Christmas approaches, vendors set up at busy street corners across Prague. They sell live carp to families eager to follow the Czech Christmas tradition of boney fish and potato salad. Some city residents even sacrifice showers to keep their holiday carp alive in the bathtub for several days before Christmas—or so I’ve been told. I never stooped to pry into neighbors’ tubs, or to try the country’s most typical celebratory meal. For some reason an...
Champagne and other sparkling wines are synonymous with celebration. Of course, that means many people sort through the catalogue of regions and vaguely understood words--”brut,” “sec,” “blanc de blancs,” “cuvee”--only during the holidays, turning the selection process into a kind of coin toss. High end labels from France, such as Dom Perignon, carry with them a certain mystique, as well as a hefty price tag. It’s possible, however, to find sparklers from other regions, such as Spain, New Mexico and Italy that add life to a celebration without...
Once upon a time the release of film starring Clint Eastwood would cause guys to recite one liners from the epic endlessly. This one, however, is different. The weathered actor plays one of the best scouts in baseball whose age is starting to catch up with him. The front office of the Atlanta Braves is starting to question his judgment. Through in the daughter risking her career to save his and you have a predictable, uninspired, cliche-ridden script that still manages to keep viewers engaged. Without a “make my day” moment, Eastwood still cat...

One question was answered during pre-game warm ups on Saturday. “I found it, so it’s fine,” Darbi Klinkhammer said of her number 1 jersey. The previous evening in Hershey she took the floor in number 13 after misplacing her usual kit. Kimball answered the second question—how would they respond to a loss?—within a few ticks after the opening tip off. Klinkhammer secured the ball, lined up from three point range and drained the opening shot. A minute later she fired a kick out pass on a clothesli...
The Longhorns survived on Saturday, besting Bayard 51-42. But for a time Kimball’s final December contest looked like an upset in the making. Bayard entered the day with a 2-3 record while Bruce Tjosvold’s side swept the home tournament and two more games in fine style. So the outcome may have seemed inevitable. But the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and held on despite a flurry of Caleb Reuter power moves to claim an 8-8 draw at the end of one. “We overlooked them,” Zach Rockhol...
“I thought I had a pretty good day,” said Jonathon Withrow after spending the morning and afternoon at Sidney’s Invitational. It was a bit of an understatement. Kimball’s 145 pound wrestler took first place in his class after pinning Chase County’s Michael May in round two and finishing off yet another unfortunate competitor for the title. He was one of three Longhorns to place at the varsity level. Javi Figueroa rounded out an adventurous day with silver at 152 and Rowdy Keller took home thir...
Darbi Klinkhammer may have walked under a ladder or shattered her favorite mirror--that’s conjecture. We do know, however, that before Friday night’s trip to Hershey, the Longhorns’ senior point guard misplaced her familiar number 1 jersey and was forced to don the unlucky number 13 instead. The result? Multiple Kimball turnovers and a 47-25 thrashing at the hands of the state’s second ranked squad. “It’s not the jersey, it’s the player,” Klinkhammer insisted after the team’s first loss of the...
Hershey humbled the Longhorns 55-37 in last season’s district finals. The blowout loss left a stain on an otherwise glorious 20 win campaign and knocked Kimball from state contention. After Friday night’s 51-38 win on the Panthers’ home court, Kimball’s Jordon Berger expressed the complex feelings of redemption in one word. “Payback,” he said with a smile. The Longhorns never trailed in the contest. Zach Rockhold-O’Brien and Caleb Reuter staked them to a 6-0 lead from the opening whistle. Hers...
Kimball finally wrestled at full strength Thursday night in Ogallala: seven against 12. Four Longhorns won their matches and the small squad fell just shy of an improbable team victory. But as fate would have it, the home side was open at 126, forcing both Tatum Morgan and Justin Mohr to step up one weight level. Paired against experienced, heavier wrestlers they were dispatched quickly. Down two matches, head coach Wade Brashear sent 145-pounder Jonathon Withrow onto the mat against...

The Banner County Wildcats put up a fight against the Leyton Warriors, ultimately being overcome in their loss at home December 14. The Wildcats showed promise in the first quarter, with Mike McKown, putting the Wildcats on the board with a three pointer, edging them ahead 3-2 with 6:43 to go in the first quarter. The Warriors started pulling away near the end of the first, sneaking passes behind the Wildcats’ defense for easy layups. The visitors also started anticipating the Wildcats p...
The Leyton Warriors gave Banner County trouble from the very beginning of the game in their victory over the Wildcats Friday night. The Warriors put pressure on Wildcats’ point guard Amanda Harrison from the start of the first quarter through a full court press that kept trapping her near mid-court. The visitors started to build their lead early scattering the Wildcats defense by swinging the ball causing open drives to the hoop resulting in a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. “We still need to improve a lot at seeing the whole court a...
Jonathon Withrow Wrestling at 145, Kimball’s Jonathon Withrow took first place in the Sidney Invitational tournament on Saturday. Earlier in the week, he won his match with Chris Gallegos in a dual at Ogallala. The victories extended his season record to 12-1. Darbi Klinkhammer Longhorns’ point guard Darbi Klinkhammer led the way against Bayard on Saturday. She scored a team high 16 points, grabbed a team high 7 boards and accumulated 5 steals and 4 assists. The previous night at Hershey, Kli...
