The Kimball City Council met in regular session on Dec. 7. Mayor Keith Prunty's appointments for city clerk and city treasurer from within the city's employment were approved unanimously by the council. Kim Barnwell was appointed city clerk, while Jean Klassen was also appointed city treasurer. The Kimball School Board met for their final meeting of the year on Monday, Dec. 13. The board received a “clean opinion” on their annual audit conducted by Trevor Schuessler from Rauner & Associates, P.C. The presentation by Schuessler showed no compliance issues, and the district is in a “much stronger position than two years ago.” The audit also indicated that the board has three months of expenditures, so there is “plenty of surplus.” Schuessler said the financial position of the school district has improved. The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Kimball as Gretchen Green, owner of Gretchen's Grooming, hosted a Groom-A-Thon fundraiser for a family. Gretchen said, "I wanted to make sure those kids have a Christmas. I know how hard it is to not have their mom." On Saturday, Dec. 11, Gretchen and her assistants held a fundraiser for the Tom Milhollin family. Tom's wife, Destaney, 29, died on Nov. 9 from a pulmonary embolism. Jimadaya Wheelock, 9, was one of the young shoppers Saturday in the Holiday Heroes program, which evolved out of the old Shop With a Cop effort. He said, "I am going to get some stuff for my sister and my cousin." The morning began with the Kimball Volunteer Fireman cooking breakfast, and Jimadaya's mom said, "He ate two pancakes, two sausages, and a bunch of eggs." Jimadya chimed in that he could have eaten more. Santa greeted the 20 children who were selected to participate in Holiday Heroes...

Rita Frances Maginnis, 92, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Chancellor Gardens in Clearfield, Utah. Rita was born March 21, 1929, to Leddy and Joe Heille in Wadena, MN in the front bedroom of her maternal grandmother's (Theresia Kraemer) home. She graduated from Edison High School, North East Minneapolis, with the class of 1946. She married John Maginnis from Kimball, NE at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Saint Anthony MN on December 28, 1948. Rita grew up during the... Full story
Marvin Dennis Moench passed away November 29, 2021, at the VA Center in Tucson, Arizona. He was born in Sidney, Nebraska, to John and Lorraine "Toots" (Nelson) Moench on June 25, 1943, and grew up in and around Potter, Nebraska, graduating from Potter High School in 1961. He was drafted into the Army in 1965, and honorably discharged in October 1967. Nina M. Nelson, 94, of Kimball, died at SRMC Extended Care in Sidney on Friday, December 3, 2021. Cremation has been held and there will be no services. Payton Wise recently signed a letter of intent to golf at Chadron State. Attending the signing at Kimball High, from left, are her father Chad, brother Dillon, Payton, brother Breckin and mother Jennifer. Payton will continue her golf career after medaling at State each of her four Kimball seasons. She will join a group of Chadron teammates who carded from 76 to 86 over two rounds, right in Payton's range, in their last ompetition in the fall.... Full story
Trey Schindler, above wearing his Kimball colors, was one of three – count 'em, three – Longhorns who wrestled their way to first place at the St. Pats Tourney last week in North Platte. Schindler was first at 152 pounds, James McGinnis first at 132 and Cody Brinkman first at 120. Matthew Johnson was second at 106 and Justin Klosterman third at 145. Kimball's Lady Longhorns basketball team continued its good start to the season by splitting two games against rivals Perkins County and Morrill over the week. The results moved the Lady Longhorns to 3-2 on the season with one game left to play in December on the road against 4-0 Hershey on Friday, Dec. 17. Friday, Dec.10 Perkins County 80, Kimball 36 Game four on this young season at Perkins County saw our young team hit the floor ready to go at it again. Perkins County had already two big SPVA Conference wins but our boys did not let that faze them. Kyle Fraser, out lone Junior, was back from injury ready to give it a go and provided us with a great boost on and off the floor. The Potter-Dix Coyote basketball team has started well so far this season, with two relatively easy wins as the boys settle into the basketball season. Potter-Dix hosted Creek Valley on Friday and had no trouble opening up a big lead then continuing their momentum for a big win, 62-23 to start their season.
