  • Across the fence

    Tim Nolting|Nov 10, 2016

FROM THE WHITE HOUSE: November 11, 1919 President Woodrow Wilson: "A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities, and gave to the world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and juster set of international relations. The soldiers and people of the European Allies had fought and endured for more than four years to uphold the barrier of civilization against the...

  • Letter to the editor

    Nov 10, 2016

A boy student, in the 12th grade, starved for attention, parched for understanding, handed in the following poem to his teacher: “He always wanted to explain things, but no one cared. So he drew, sometimes he would draw and it wasn’t anything. He wanted to carve it in stone or write it in the sky. He would lie out on the grass and look up at the sky, and it would be only the sky and him and the things inside him that needed saying. And it was after that he drew the picture. It was a beautiful picture. He kept it under his pillow and would let...

  • Letter to the editor

    Nov 10, 2016

I think that we should acknowledge the Sheriff’s Office and Kimball Police for protecting the kids on Halloween. They parked at the intersection of Sixth and Adams, where I live and made sure that children were safe and even handed out little treats. I think it was a positive for Kimball and I think they should be acknowledged. Thank you for your concern, for being there and for the glow sticks that you passed out to the children. Carol Novotny - Kimball...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Nov 10, 2016

When I was in high school we had a career fair of sorts. Recruiters from colleges and all branches of the military came to speak with us about our future plans. I was drawn to the Air Force, a dream fueled by fierce patriotism and the movie Top Gun (I know it is a Navy movie) and the dream of flying a fighter jet. After talking with the recruiter, who told me that women were NOT allowed to be fighter pilots (I hope that has changed by now), we engaged in a fairly short but heated conversation. Shortly, this recruiter determined that I did not...

  • Veterans History Project

    Larry Nelson|Nov 10, 2016

The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. The Selective Service System (Draft Board) in the Fleming, Colorado area was close to being aggressive in late 1944 and into 1945. Maurice J. Schaeffer turned eighteen in March 1944. Before the year was out he was drafted. The Draft Board allowed him...

  • Wreath sales begin as Kimball prepares for another holiday season

    Tonia Copeland|Nov 10, 2016

Following a one-year hiatus, the St. Hilda’s Episcopal Church parish will once again sell holiday wreaths, according to longtime coordinator, Wilma Gilliland. St. Hilda’s Episcopal Church has raised funds for decades through these annual wreath sales. Though the small congregation now sells solely to repeat, and very satisfied customers, they once made enough money to furnish the parish hall at the church and complete one very large project – Kimball’s first tennis court. But, as Wilma said, first things first. In the beginning, the idea was th...

    Aleta Pearson|Nov 10, 2016

The Lady Longhorns 2016 varsity season ended with 11 wins and 21 losses. It may have been a disappointing season in comparison to the previous year's record of 17-10 but they did prove that they could work together as a team despite changing from a 6-2 format to 5-1 mid-season. Junior Hannah Biesecker led the Lady Horns in all around stats both offensively and defensively. This season she served up 45 aces, only 10 less than her older sister who served 55 the previous year as a senior, and is...
