    5 pounds and 14 oz. and 18 inches long. Kimball's first baby of 2018, Freya Dawn Seymour, has ten perfect fingers, ten little toes and a full head of hair. She was born at 12:52 in the afternoon on Jan. 5, and was welcomed by mom, Amber Baber and dad, Brandon Seymour, as well as two big brothers and two big sisters!   • Family grateful to escape the house fire that took their home

    One local family is grateful to have escaped a late-night house fire unharmed, though the blaze destroyed their home and belongings. The cause of the fire that destroyed the 206 N. Myrtle residence and displaced the family Sunday night has yet to be determined, though initially it is believed to have begun in one of the childrens' bedrooms.     More than a dozen Kimball students have opted to attend classes in neighboring districts this year. During the December Board of Education meeting High School principal, Eugene Hanks, reported to the board that 17 students currently opt into either Banner County or Potter-Dix schools.     A recent online auction brings more than the Kimball County Commissioners expected. After the decision to sell the 1994 770 DH Motor Grader, a 2000 Back Sloper, and a 1981 John Deere 4440 tractor, the Board of Commissioners’ hopes were not high as to what they would bring at auction time. However, to their surprise Big Iron Auction closed the auction on the 1994 Grader at $26,500.     The Kimball Landfill is one step closer to the needed cell expansion as the Board of Public Works voted to recommend an engineering proposal from Golder and Associates of Lakewood, Colo. The proposal was one of two received for the project, which is not a construction bid, but rather a proposal to oversee the process from bidding the job, assuring quality construction, reporting to both the City of Kimball and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and overseeing all aspects of construction through completion.     The Kimball Boys suffered a pair of losses on the home court over the weekend, losing to Bridgeport 56-41 Friday night and falling to Gordon-Rushville 47-26 on Saturday. A taller Bridgeport club with outside talent to go with their height, gave Kimball an early 3-0 lead, but soon took control and never looked back as they dominated despite hard play by the Horns.     No surprises when it comes to Lance Juelfs' Lady Coyotes on the season. The Potter-Dix ladies came out of last week with three wins, including wins over Kimball, Leyton and Hay Springs.     Returning from the holiday break, the Banner County Lady Wildcats were barely bested by the Hay Springs club, 46-45, in a non-conference game played on the road on Friday, Jan. 5. The Lady Cats were up in the first quarter 9-6, but their opponents were able to tie the score by the end of the second quarter, earning 19 points while keeping the Banner County girls to 16 for a tie at 25 to end the first half.     Kimball took four wrestlers to the Chase County Invitational Tournament this past Saturday and all four placed in the top six medal group. Garrett Pedersen at 120 and Connor Cluff at 113, both went 4 and 1 on the day and finished 3rd. Cluff had 2 falls and 2 decisions on the day, losing his one match by a 16-5 decision. Pedersen ran his season record to 21-7 with 2 wins by fall and 2 decisions and lost 8-0 to a wrestler from Hitchcock County who has wrestled over 50 matches this season already.     A tough week for the Potter-Dix boys ends in three losses. The first of three came against Kimball last Tuesday at home when Kimball outscored the Coyotes 16-7 in the first quarter, and 19-6 in the second. Heading into half time with a score of 35-13 with the Longhorns on top. Second half for the Coyotes looked about the same with Kimball outscoring them 19-12 in the third and 14-4 in the fourth for a final score of 68-29.     If you want to take in any Kimball High basketball this weekend, you will need to head for North Platte and the Community College gym as that is where the SPVA Conference Tournament will be finishing up after the first round play and Monday and Tuesday were held at the seeded teams’ home sites.     Racking up 2 more wins for the Kimball Boys JV Basketball Team running their season record to 7-2. On Friday they won over Bridgeport 46-35 and on Saturday they defeated Gordon-Rushville 54-33. In the win over Bridgeport, Colton Mielke nailed a pair of treys and scored 10 points.
