    Aleta Pearson with Hollie Clark|Oct 27, 2016

A new mural supporting the Kimball Longhorns has been painted on the east side of the A&L building across the street from Firstier Bank. The idea started last fall when A&L contacted the school that they wanted to make the east wall of their building available for a school mural project. The owners, Allen and Lindsey Chavez, felt that making the bare space into a mural would be, "a cool way to support the school and give students a chance to be creative," and contacted superintendent, Marshall...

Kimball Event Center discussion resumed at the recent Kimball City Council meeting, on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Board member Christy Warner is leading a committee of 12 members dedicated to saving the facility after budget cuts were made that could shut it down at the end of the year, due to a 40 percent loss of sales tax. “We had a couple of meetings with citizens that had some concerns and we got a lot of feedback,” Warner said. “We recently made some positive changes in operations at the Event Center. It is still a lot of work to do to see wheth...

  • Letter to the editor

    Oct 27, 2016

My husband and I stopped at the Welcome Center near Kimball last Friday, 10/14 for some information about the Sandhills region and other points of interest in the area. We were returning to Omaha from Cheyenne after visiting Panorama Point the previous day on a road trip with friends from Minnesota. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Virginia at the Welcome Center and getting several pieces of information, plus maps to help guide us to several interesting places. We just wanted to let you know how helpful Virginia was and how much we...

  • Raves, rants and reality

    Aleta Pearson|Oct 27, 2016

I want to RAVE about my favorite holiday, Halloween. Also known as Samhain and All Hallows’ Eve, this awesome holiday is soon approaching, to the delight of children everywhere. Kids of all ages, myself included, will be happily dressed in costumes, wearing masks or make-up and running around schools, neighborhoods and businesses acting a bit more batty (pun intended) than normal. And why is this? Of course, children will respond with a resounding chorus of, “CANDY” but surely that can’t entirely be the reason. I’m not going to go into the...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Oct 27, 2016

As a youngster I was able to participate in 4-H for a short time. Though I don’t remember why I didn’t continue along the 4-H path, I do clearly remember the positive impact the program had on me. I joined a sewing club and my sister joined a cooking club. She made these delicious little treats and I put together a pretty darn good pin cushion (that I still have today). Each of us spent time with our mom working on projects, trying until we got something just right. Those moments are some of my favorite memories. I think back to seeing my pro...

  • Veterans History Project

    Larry Nelson|Oct 27, 2016

The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. In the late sixties, young men facing the draft had decisions to make. Many figured that about every third person drafted into military service was going to become a US Marine. That worked for some. Others wanted to guide their own futures. Richard L....

  • Hernandez honored for going above and beyond - recruitment was a huge success

    Tonia Copeland|Oct 27, 2016

After dodging fellow VFW member Walt Witt for years, a family request put Kimball's Joe Hernandez on the path to receive another commendation. "I have been a member since 1954 or '55 – 67 years or so," Hernandez said. "For years I dodged Walt Witt, but when a cousin of mine passed away the kids wanted me to be involved in the honor guard." Seeing an opportunity, Witt was able to convince Hernandez to help and once he got involved, Hernandez saw that there was a real need for active members. "The...

  • Longhorns fall to state ranked Valentine 40-0

    Tom Southard|Oct 27, 2016

The 2016 football season came to an end Friday evening for the Kimball High Longhorns as they fell to the state ranked Valentine 40-0, but the score doesn't tell the entire story as the young Horns gave a good effort. Kimball played the visiting Badgers pretty even in the first quarter with neither team getting on the score board, and even at half time the Horns trailed just 14-0. "I felt we did a very good job that first half and the kids bought into our game plan, but they (Valentine) made...
