Thursday, Oct. 1, Kimball County residents discovered that COVID-19 has revisited the county with Panhandle Public Health District reporting two cases – one community spread and one close contact. Kimball Frenchman Valley Cooperative held an open house for its new flat storage facility that will hold an estimated 2 million bushels of corn – and they are already starting to fill it up. FVC began accepting corn for the storage facility Sept. 24, while the open house came a week later on Oct. 1. Helen I. Kuhlman, 96, of Kimball, died at Kimball Health Services on Monday, September 28, 2020. Funeral services for Helen were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2020 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball with Pastor Kenneth Mars officiating. Burial followed in the Kimball Cemetery. Payton Wise Shot a new personal best 18 holes of golf to better her own Kimball High School record and the Kimball girls finished 3rd at the District Tournament held at Crandell Creek Golf Course in Ogallala Monday to qualify for the State Tournament in Columbus to be played this Monday-Tuesday. Potter-Dix’s Coyote Football team remained unbeaten as they traveled to Big Springs on Friday and recovered from a slow start to beat the South Platte Blue Knights in convincing fashion, 62-to-27. A surprisingly slow first quarter had the Coyotes only up 6-to-0, but as the second quarter developed the Potter-Dix squad went on a run and opened up a big 27-to-7 lead at the half. The Kimball Longhorns football team continued its season of struggle, falling behind early and losing their sixth straight game against the Bayard Tigers at home on Friday. The Bayard team got the jump early on the Longhorns, going up 28-to-6 in the first quarter and putting the Longhorns in a position to play from behind. Kimball’s Longhorn Cross Country team had a busy week, traveling to the Gothenburg Invite on October 1, and the boys squad finished with a 14th place finish led by senior Connor Cluff’s 67th place finish at 20:35. Kimball’s Lady Longhorn Volleyball team opened October with a victory against the Hemingford Lady Bobcats in straight sets, 2-to-0. After losing to Bridgeport and Morrill by straight sets, the Lady Longhorns found their groove and made it two out of three against the rival Lady Bobcats. The Kimball squad had no trouble in the first set, winning 25-to-12, but the Hemingford team fought hard in the second set until the Lady Longhorns were able to put the set away 25-to-23 and take a 2-to-0 match victory. Potter-Dix’s Lady Coyote Volleyball team had a strong start to the season, but has hit a stretch losing eight straight matches, only winning three sets during the run. The last three losses started on Tuesday Sept. 29 when the Lady Coyotes traveled to Big Springs for a Triangular with South Platte and Bayard.
