    Kimball Public Schools began its 2019-20 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 21, and according to Kimball Superintendent Elizabeth Owens, several new programs will be implemented. More classroom time will be spent on reading and math, which will be the focus in the elementary grades. A brand new K-6 Reading series called Ready Gen was purchased for about $90,000.     Kimball County Manor is appealing a disciplinary action notice by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services following the May 30 death of manor resident Marllene Goodon due to an accident there. The appeal enables the nursing home and assisted living facility to operate normally with no sanctions during an appeal process that could last a year or more, manor social services coordinator Michelle Daum told the Observer on Tuesday.     An open case exists regarding the unintended death of a 21 year-old male in Kimball on Aug. 11 due to what police are calling an apparent drug overdose. The Kimball Police Department said it continues to investigate the apparent overdose. An autopsy has been ordered, but results from the chemical analysis will not be available for a few weeks. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office filed the coroner’s report, but the county attorney’s office had yet to release it as of Monday, Aug. 19. The man’s identity also was not released.     The Lukassens were reconized at the Kimball-Banner County Fair as a 100-year farm family. This is their story. Theodore Lukassen was born in Holland in April 1864. At the age of 18 he came to the United States from Amsterdam on the ship Scholden. His sister, Wilhelmina, or known as Minnie, accompanied him.     Dale and Lyllian Dedic have been selected as grand marshals for Potter Days 2019. They will reign over the celebration from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1. Dale was born in Sidney and raised in Potter, graduating in 1958 from Potter High. He attended Wesleyan University in Lincoln and worked for the State Department of Roads.   • Farmer Klent Schnell Gives $2,500 To Bushnell Johnson Fire District

    Kimball County farmer Klent Schnell recently was awarded an America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation of $2,500 and gave it to a local nonprofit organization – the Bushnell Johnson Rural Fire District. It’s a story that began last summer. Schnell was in the tractor listening to the radio and heard about the program, which the Bayer Fund sponsors.     The Four Winds Men’s Monday-Tuesday Golf League has all but wrapped up its golf season with only the men’s combined scramble remaining this Sunday afternoon. The year-end scramble for the Four Winds Men was held a week back with six teams involved, and the top five teams all finished within strokes of each other, according to organizer Pat O’Brien.     Dar Evertson and Judy Daum crushed the remaining team on hole No. 7 to win the Horse Race Scramble competition Aug. 14 in the Women's Golf League Association.
