A large wildfire south of Gering destroyed three homes as August began on Monday and damaged several others as it continued to spread through the dry vegetation in Nebraska’s Wildcat Hills. As of Monday afternoon, aerial surveillance showed the Carter Canyon Fire to be at 15,591 acres, an increase from 13,051 acres yesterday due to significant wind-driven runs. Bushnell Volunteer Fire Chief Klent Schnell explained the process that the fire department personnel used to secure a $5,000 grant for the fire department from Plains All-American. In 2000, the first grade classes at Kimball's West Elementary School filled and buried a time capsule which was to be opened in the year 2025. No one knew that before the time capsule would be opened in 2025, elementary classes would be moved out of West Elementary and the building would be sold to Kimball Health Services. Good morning, back here in a heat wave. Still not as hot as it was, and people in Texas or Missouri have the heat plus the humidity, so there is that. Kimball County Tourism Director Jessica Rocha submitted her resignation to the Kimball County Commissioners at the August 2 regular county board meeting. Rocha will continue until August 12 as the County Tourism Director. She has been in the position for three and a half years.
