  • Volunteers wanted for summer fun at Oliver

    Dakota Kuhns|Jun 21, 2018

Guests at Oliver Reservoir will soon see a new Camp Host. Kimball County Sheriff Harry Gillway was the Camp Host last summer, and a shining familiar light was seen from the small lake that was forgotten years ago with the increased number of visitors. In many opinions Oliver was a well kept and well respected lake and campground in the panhandle. The area was kept safe, clean and user friendly. It seems noticeable to frequent Oliver visitors that the lake this camping season isn’t what it has been in the past. Campers who spend the majority o...

  • Couches are not compostable

    Tonia Copeland|Jun 21, 2018

Couches are not compostable. The City of Kimball provides dumpsters to all Kimball residents, both brown from household waste and green for compostable items. Neither of these dumpsters are to be used for flooring, couches, wood or other large items. Household waste is anything that one might bag in wastebaskets within their home and compostable material includes grass clippings, leaves and small twigs only. Many of the items carelessly left in the dumpsters, or next to them, can be taken to the Kimball Landfill free of charge to City of...

  • Local fireworks fundraiser winner announced, continued donations sought

    Assunta Nelson for the Observer|Jun 21, 2018

Over the past few months many of you noticed and contributed to the Firework Fund Spare Change drive. We could not be prouder of all the businesses and citizens who participated – especially in April when the Fourth of July seemed like months away. The Spare Change Jars came about after some discussion of “who” should be responsible for financing the spectacle. In the past the Chamber of Commerce and more recently Karen Robinson have spearheaded donations from local businesses, select citizens, and requested assistance from the City’s Keno Fu...

  • Meal program serves kids and adults throughout summer

    Desyree Nelson|Jun 21, 2018

Danessa Terrill, Food Service Director for Kimball Public Schools, is serving up free breakfast and lunch at Mary Lynch Elementary during the summer. Funding received for the program comes from nutrition services through the Nebraska Department of Education, as well as the USDA for families to eat a good meal on a daily basis for free. The kids head to the school with parents, babysitters, and or friends for breakfast and or lunch and sometimes an added bonus of playtime in the gym. Many will...

  • KPD urges citizens to be alert

    Tonia Copeland|Jun 21, 2018

Safeguard your property and don’t hesitate to call the police if something seems suspicious. This from Kimball Police Chief Andy Bremer as his department just closed one stolen vehicle investigation and opened a second. This first, a stolen pickup, was recovered in Colorado and the suspect is in custody, Bremer said, but he still urges caution. “Though the suspect is currently in custody, make sure you are vigilant; safeguard your property,” he said. “Lock your vehicles. Don’t leave firearms or any valuables in your vehicles.” Bremer stat...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 21, 2018

This writing is in response to the John and Suny Moore ‘Letter to the Editor’ dated June 7, 2018. I feel that there should be clarification regarding the directing of the program this year, as opposed to all the prior years. First of all, it was not a VFW Service. It was a county program, planned and directed by a county employee, our Veteran’s Service Officer. In years past, the program has been organized and directed by the Veterans of Foreign War and the Auxiliary. The Memorial Day Services we presented were not meant to be for entertainment...

The Greenwood family came out on top once again in winning the championship of the 2018 Father's Day Golf Classic held this past weekend at the Four Winds Golf Course. Kenny Greenwood and his sons, Jeffrey and Jordan, shot the low rounds both days of 60-61=121 to win by 4 strokes over the Daum family team of Mark Daum and sons, Colton and Jake, that claimed 2nd place with their rounds of 63-62=125 to win by scorecard playoff over the team of Kelly Garrett, Tyler Garrett and Gene Golding who...

The annual Father’s Day Golf Classic 3-person scramble is now in the books and, like always, it certainly is a classic event hosted by the Thursday Night Men’s Golf League, with Randy Bohac, the man in charge. It is so encouraging to see all of the many family-oriented teams of father and sons, or grandsons, or cousins, and even moms. Such was the case of the Robinson team with Father Greg out of action with a broken ankle, Mom Nora took his place, and with the help of son, Tony, and nephew, Jarrod Schnell, they ended up in 2nd place in the...
