    Dakota Kuhns|May 30, 2019

Mother Nature held back the breeze for just long enough Monday morning for the 2019 Memorial Day program earlier this week. John Beaty, VFW Post 2243 Commander, welcomed those in attendance and it was followed by an opening prayer by Post Chaplain Don Olson. Mayor Keith Prunty spoke words of deep meaning for our county's fallen soldiers, and an everlasting thank you to those who have served our country as he gave an introduction to the program. • Local Greenhouse Ready For Business

    Daria Andersen-Faden|May 30, 2019

Mike's Greenhouse on the corner of Burg and 2nd Street has just about any plant the weekend gardener might need or want. For the past five years, Mike Schepker along with helper Karen Munoz (his mom) has been open for locals to get their tomato, pepper, cucumbers and other bedding plants. Starting out in a little shed, Mike sold plants out of that for two years but realized he needed and wanted something bigger. Mike checked out the internet, searched how to make a greenhouse and started...

  • Kimball Gets Some Spring Cleaning

    Daria Andersen-Faden|May 30, 2019

The City of Kimball employees have been hard at it in order to get the town shaped up for the summer season. The Street Department is "kind of the city custodians" according to Jim Shoup, Street Department Supervisor. The snow put a damper on their work but they have been busy mowing the highway right of ways, the parks and the city's empty lots. Kimball City Employees, Mark Nelson and Larry Janicek cleaned the eight planter areas in the downtown region, then put new cedar bark in the planter...

  • So Many Stories Over The Years

    Tom Southard|May 30, 2019

After last week’s story on Brady Kilgore bringing home three medals from the Nebraska State Track Meet and informing you readers about Jay Staehr doing this himself back in 1994, I asked for you readers to come up with some of your own memories of outstanding feats at the state meets. Coach Bill Wallace responded with a call about his 1971 Banner County High girl’s track team that won an all class gold medal in the 1971 State meet held in Grand Island. His 4 x 200 relay team of Peggy King, LeAnn May, Jeannie Larson, and Amy Lease ran 1:4...

  • WEATHER LIMITS STATE GOLF TO ONE DAY

    Tom Southard|May 30, 2019

The 2019 Nebraska Boy's State Golf Tournament did not play out as planned thanks to some nasty weather that cancelled out the two day format, limiting it to just one day and 18 holes of play. The Class C State Tournament was held at the Meadow Lark Hills Golf Course in Kearney and the Kimball High team went down early hoping to get in some practice rounds to prepare them for tournament play, but again thanks to the weather, coach Chad Wise said "We were only able to get in 6 holes of practice, a...

The Jon Howton Memorial proceeds were to be donated to the SPNRD-Oliver Reservoir. Totals have yet to be determined but look for a photo and amounts in an upcoming edition of the Observer. A bracket of 14 kicked off the day with a double elimination, singles set up. Donny Petersen took home third place, Anthony Kuhns second and Curtis...
