  • Filling in the gaps

    Tonia Copeland|May 4, 2017

Though University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension internships are generally provided for upperclassmen, a recent Kimball graduate will begin her first internship this summer, after just completing her freshman year. During her 2016 annual report to the Kimball County Board of Commissioners, UNL Extension educator Karen DeBoer said that since last fall, Extension Agent Aaron Berger has been serving a state-wide role as an educator in the cattle industry and has relocated to the High Plains Ag lab for the majority of the week to better serve in...

  • Kimball could become a recreation destination

    Tonia Copeland|May 4, 2017

Recreation was high on the list for the Kimball City Council at their regular meeting on Tuesday, April 18. Council heard one local company’s offer to build at Janicek Dam before hearing a request to limit access to Gotte Park. “We would like to build a remote control course (at Janicek Dam),” said Jerry Deines, manager of Z&S Construction. “It would keep kids off the street with them (remote control cars) and it would be in a safe spot.” Deines said the company wished to complete the project at no cost to the City of Kimball. Z&S would do...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Tami Briscoe-Rutt

    Tonia Copeland|May 4, 2017

Although she and her husband moved to the Kimball area from Minnesota in 2012, Tami Briscoe-Rutt may not yet be familiar to many. They had been looking for a ranch since 2004 and while their search began in New Mexico, they found their home on the western Nebraska range and they now run a cow/calf operation south of Kimball and they raise chickens as well. Briscoe-Rutt has a diverse background centered on customer service and she is excited to begin her duties in Kimball as the new Community Ser...

  • Veteran's History Project

    Larry Nelson|May 4, 2017

The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. Robert Palmer's Dad made Robert promise to finish high school before he went into the Navy. The dad, a WWI sailor, knew that if his son went off to the Navy, he would never finish high school. Robert (Bob) went to the school principal and talked with...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|May 4, 2017

After several weeks of searching, the Western Nebraska Observer staff is full once again. Our previous advertising representative, Stefanie Bartels, took a position with the local post office. We are thrilled for Stef, and though we miss her dearly, we are excited for the changes in our office. Our own Aleta Pearson took the marketing specialist position, and she is doing great. Aleta has many years of design experience and it shows. We encourage all of our readers and advertisers to contact Aleta for any advertising and marketing needs. Since...

  • Withrow Best in the West in the worst of the worst

    Tom Southard|May 4, 2017

Kimball's Jaden Withrow proved once again he is the Best of the Best, at the Best in the West, in the worst of the worst! For the third consecutive year, Withrow brought home the gold medal from the Best in the West track meet, held at the Scottsbluff Bearcat Stadium on, perhaps, the worst evening ever, weather wise, proving he is the Best of the Best in the triple jump event. His winning jump this year, in the terrible cold, wet and windy conditions was 43 feet and ¾ inches. In his...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|May 4, 2017

Cold and winter type weather has played havoc with our area sports schedules once again so not a lot to report this meet that was held on a very nasty afternoon/evening. The junior high track at Pine Bluffs this past week has been cancelled. The SPVA high school track at Hershey was postponed and moved back from last Friday to this past Tuesday. The Western Trails Golf Tournament to be held at Mitchell this past Saturday was postponed and moved to Kimball to be held in conjunction with the Kimball Invitational Tournament. The Bayard Golf Tourna...
