    Daria Anderson-Faden, The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

Although the polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 12, they may not be busy at all due to the response to the coronavirus outbreak. According to the Kimball County Clerk's Office, they have sent out 1,018 early voting ballots while they usually have between 200 to 300. Comparing this years' primary to the 2018 primary, the total number of people who voted in 2018 was 928 and only 167 were early voters. More early voter ballots were sent out this year than total people that voted in the 2018...

  • What's Old Is New Again

    Daria Anderson-Faden, The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

More than 100 years ago, the world, the United States and Kimball County dealt with a raging flu pandemic. With no vaccine or antiviral drugs to treat it, the Spanish flu was deadly and spread quickly. Much like today, residents were ordered to wear masks, quarantine when necessary, stay away from groups of people and stay healthy. Imagine an absence of TV, radio, cell phones and internet. The only method of information was the local weekly newspaper. To set the scene on life at the time,...

  • Kimball's John Aguiniga Beats COVID-19

Regional West Public Relations, For The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

Before contracting COVID-19, 55-year old Kimball resident John Aguiniga was the picture of health and vitality. "I was never sick and had never spent a day in the hospital," he said. "I thought I was invincible." What began as a headache and slight fever while John and his wife Jennifer were house hunting in northern Colorado and planning for their upcoming move, soon escalated to flu-like symptoms. He tested negative for influenza at the Kimball Health Services clinic on March 23, but was not t...

  • Help Businesses Stay Open During Virus: Play Business Bingo!

    Jessica Rocha, Visit Kimball|Apr 30, 2020

This past month has managed to pass by quickly, even if I didn’t have any idea what day of the week it was all month! Working from home has presented plenty of challenges, but has also let me find some creative outlets. I have enjoyed creating digital stories about the High Point, a short grass prairie presentation with Shaun Evertson, and an area photo contest. If you are interested in checking them out, visit www.youtube.com and search for ‘Kimball Area Tourism’. I have also put together some bingo cards and word games for a way to have...

  • Banner County Notes: Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

Good morning Banner County! Here is hoping to find you doing well, especially during these somewhat stressful times. Daily, I think of how much worse the situation could be, and I am thankful. It seems like maybe soon at least a little bit of our county will be opening back up. I am skeptical as to whether that is good or not. A whole lot of common sense seems to be key right now. I was in a store recently and noticed an elderly couple with masks, but they were not on. The lady had hers pulled to the side talking to her husband, and he had his...

  • Linn Aces No. 3; Daum On All-Decade Team

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 30, 2020

STEVE LINN and his hole-in-one at the Four Winds this past week is my lead story this week. Steve got his first ace on April 22 on hole number 3 using a 7 iron from the blue tees while playing in a three-some with Pat O’Brien and Dennis Hoffman. An added bit of excitement for myself was I got to witness the hole-in-one as I was waiting for my turn to tee off on number 4. I watched the ball go by the pin about 2 feet and then back up and roll back down into the hole. Congrats to you, Steve! After this accomplishment, of course, the conversation...

  • Missing Our Spring Sports

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

With all of the spring sports canceled, I thought maybe we could take a look back at last year by repeating a story I wrote when our Kimball boys golf team won its fourth consecutive District Golf Title. Enjoy the memory! The Kimball High Boys Golf Team took care of business one more time in winning its fourth straight District Championship Monday at the Cross Creek Golf Links in Cambridge. The three senior varsity golfers on the team have been a part of those four District titles, and all...
