Citizens may have heard a rumor going around town that the Kimball Public Library could be moved into the Kimball Event Center, but such is not the case. Kimball vocal and instrumental students received 23 superior ratings and three excellent ratings at the Mar. 20 SPVA Conference competition in Sutherland. Local students performed 24 solos and duets at this event along with Jazz Band and Show Choir. All three judges gave ones, high ratings, to show choir and jazz band. The Lions Club of Kimball is taking major steps to make improvements to the ball fields this summer, with president, Sonny, and secretary, Kathy Porter leading the way. The Parks and Recreation Board could not make needed improvements within their budget, so Kathy and Sonny, along with the Lions Club, took it upon themselves to attempt raising the funds. Dolores (Dee) Anne Atkins Horton, age 77, of Greeley, Colorado, passed away March 21, 2018. She was born April 18, 1940 in Kimball, Nebraska to Vernon DeWitt and Virginia Maida Stearley Atkins. She married Jerry Donald (Don) Horton on August 2, 1985. Dee loved music and was a former member of the Fort Collins Women's Chorale and Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus. Muriel Hensley, age 93, died Sunday, March 25, 2018 in Beloit, Kansas. She was born in Denver, Colorado and moved at a young age to Superior, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school. Later she graduated from Chadron State College in Nebraska and the University of Wyoming with an advanced degree. She was a homemaker and teacher. Muriel married Max Hensley on October 25, 1942. Last Tuesday, March 20, the Board of Commissioners met with Dan Osborne, from Top Coat, Inc. to discuss and consider a proposal to chip seal a few different roads in Kimball County. The sections of roads include; four miles south and two and a half miles north on County Road 59, two miles north on county road 17, one mile south on county road 45, and all from Highway 30 and 8/10 of a mile on County Road 28, west of Highway 71. The Pine Bluffs Hornets captured the team championship in both the boys and girls divisions at Saturday's Kimball Track and Field Invitational, with Kimball runnerup in both divisions. In the boy's division, Pine Bluffs amassed 206 points with Kimball a distant 2nd with 134, followed by Hemingford with 71, Minatare 58, Potter-Dix 25 and Banner County 18. The Potter-Dix Track Team enjoyed a good outing at the Kimball Invitational Track and Field Meet with the girls finishing 4th in the team standings with 76 points and the boys ending up 5th with 25 points. Senior, Trinity Langley, excelled in winning the high jump at 4'8", taking 2nd in the triple jump at 32'3.5", 3rd in the 200 meter dash in 31.10 and teaming with Jessica Gingerich, Payge Hoffman and December Wright to run the winning time in the 4x400 relay, clocking 4:57.40 to take the gold....
Banner County High has only six athletes out for track this spring, but those six athletes perform at a high level! At the Kimball Invite Saturday, the Lady Wildcats scored 47 points. McKenna Dahlgrin won both of the weight events, taking the shot put with a heave of 36'7.75", over 2 feet better than 2nd place, and destroyed the rest of the field in the discus with her winning throw of 110'1.5" with 2nd place at 95'6.5". Kimball hosted their Invitational Track Meet this past Saturday and it was a success. The weather was a bit cool and a bit windy at times, but overall, not bad for Western Nebraska at this time of year. A salute to Kimball Activities Director, Ken Smith, for organizing everything, and he and his staff, for keeping things running smoothly. The Kimball track and facilities were in great condition. Kimball High head track Coach, Gene Mohr, reports the numbers are up this spring with 29 boys and 20 girls checked out at the time of this writing. Coach Mohr and his staff also have some quality athletes returning, as well as, good numbers. The Banner County tracksters have started their 2018 Spring season under the guidance of head Coach, Kari Gifford, returning for her eighth year with the assistance of Bill Gifford and Priscilla Bastian.
