The Kimball High School FFA members spent their "day off" from school, Wed., Mar. 3 – working hard at a Career Development Event (CDE) held at the Kimball Banner County fairgrounds and at the high school. Kimball Lions Club held their annual 9 Pin No Tap bowling tournament over a two weekend period in February. This is the main fundraiser for the oldest Lions Club in the state of Nebraska. The funds raised from the tournament are used specifically for the Kimball area. Programs such as hearing and vision screening for children and the general public, and the scholarship program are made possible from the funds raised. Vira "Vi" K. Colson, 76, of Kimball, died at Kimball Health Services on Friday, March 4, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Pine Bluffs Baptist Church with Pastor Dan DeBruyn officiating. Burial will be in the Kimball Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. The family will be present from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. to receive friends. Raymond Little (Ray) spent most of his growing-up years in Fort Collins, CO. He was a scrappy kid, whose household could have been a little warmer. When he was seventeen, he had quit high school. His mother sent him to the Post Office in Fort Collins and Ray was soon taken by a recruiting poster. It was a large picture of Uncle Sam pointing one of his fingers at the reader. The 2015-16 basketball season for the Kimball High boys was a losing season as far as wins and losses go, but it will be remembered also as a season of aggressive play and all-out effort! The Longhorns ended up with 7 wins and 14 losses. They were hampered by a lack of height and had to make up for it by playing very aggressive on both ends of the court, using pressure defense and fast paced offense, along with some outside shooting which worked fine on nights when the shots were falling, but not so good when they weren’t. Mike Daum continues to excel for South Dakota State University. This past week he was named to the All Summit League Team, was selected to the All New Comers Team, was named Freshman of the Year for the Summit League Conference, and was named Summit League Sixth Man of the Year! He accomplished all of this in his first year of Division one basketball as a red-shirt freshman. Yep, you can always tell when spring sports season has arrived in Western Nebraska by the weather! If we get some snow, rain, cold and wind, spring sports season has arrived. None the less, Kimball High track coach Gene Mohr has a nice turnout this spring with 53 total including 28 boys and 25 girls and this could go up or down by a couple or so I would imagine. The listings of this season’s Western Trails All Conference Basketball Teams were announced this week after voting by the conference coaches. Several local pool players were recently recognized for winning the Fall Session of the American Poolplayers Association (APA) 8-Ball and 9-Ball Pool Leagues.
