LB 712, known as Create the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Deployment Fund, was introduced by Sen. Brian Hardin of 48th District that includes the Kimball area. Sen. Steve Erdman from the 47th District, along with six other senators, have signed onto the bill that would benefit Kimball and the Panhandle during the missile project. John Heidemann and Jim Shoup were awarded the 2022 Community Environmental Impact Award from the South Platte Natural Resources District. The Kimball City Council approved the placement of the award on the wall of the park shop/bathroom building in Gotte Park at the meeting on Tuesday. Another placement sign thanking the groups, businesses, and individuals for upgrading the horseshoe pits in Gotte Park was approved and will be mounted. The City of Kimball and Keep Kimball Beautiful received more than $172,000 in grants to combat waste and litter reduction and help with recycling and scrap tire cleanups. Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy announced $7 million in grants to 140 different projects throughout the state. Spud Rowley from Kimball Recycling and Keep Kimball Beautiful said that the recycling, public education and waste reduction were "fully funded" this year for $117,000; all three of those areas play a... Kimball County Manor received hundreds of balloons Tuesday for its residents on Valentine's Day. Family Dollar/Dollar Tree gave customers an opportunity to purchase balloons for the manor, and the results were overwhelming. As a junior in high school at Lincoln East, Chad Wise was offered a full-ride scholarship to play golf at the University of Nebraska. On his way to the signing at the university, Wise was involved in a 34-car pile-up on 70th Street in Lincoln. Wise received injuries to his back and left knee. After his recovery, Wise played his senior year at Lincoln East but could not play collegiate golf after the car accident. The Kimball City/County Park & Recreation Executive Board met on Feb. 7 with the main item on the agenda to approve or amend the Management of (Four Winds) Golf Course Contract as presented by the City/County Park and Recreation Board. The current contract with Chad Wise (CW Management, LLC) is set to expire on May 6. Good morning Banner County! Blue skies and spring in the air, every few days anyway. Hopefully melting some of this snow. This past week ended with the Super Bowl – yeah Chiefs! – and the potluck and annual meeting at the Harrisburg Community Church. Both local events were well attended with a lot of great food and conversation. This week hopefully the Ignite youth group will meet on Wednesday, at 6 p.m., weather permitting. Central Banner 4-H Club members Isaac Olsen, 15, and Luke Olsen, 12, medaled at the State 4-H Indoor Archery Shoot held in Columbus from Jan. 27-29. Superintendent Trevor Anderson’s annual report released at the school board meeting on Monday, Feb. 13, revealed successful NSCAS Performance Data for the 2021-22 school year. Based on proficiency percentages, the English scores for Kimball students in grades 3-8 and 11 were significantly better than the Nebraska state average in five out of the seven grades. Rita Wagner, age 79, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at her winter home in Overton, Nevada. She was born August 18, 1943 in Sidney, Nebraska to Frank Andrew and Kathryn G. Petersen Rasmussen. On November 4, 1962 she married Wayne William Wagner in Kimball, Nebraska. Rita grew up in Kimball, but lived most of her adult life in Saratoga, Wyoming. The Longhorn Wrestlers competed at their district tournament on Friday and Saturday. Feb. 10-11, in Sutherland. After the dust cleared Kimball finished with 3 state qualifiers. Senior Matthew Johnson was the first to qualify for the state tournament with a dominant 11-0 major decision win in the semifinals. Hemingford – Friday’s game in Hemingford was one of those games that in a way you want to just forget about and move on from but we all know you can learn some of your greatest lessons from your most difficult defeats. It was the first game without leading scorer Brandon Paxton on the floor and we started the game as though we were lost without his services. The Kimball Longhorns girls basketball team hosted their final home game of the season last Tuesday against the Pine Bluffs Hornets. The Longhorns second half shooting drought led the Hornets to victory with a final score of 46-34. The team holds a record of 1-18 and is currently 0-3 in district play. The team is rebuilding stage with the majority of the athletes consisting of underclassman. The Longhorns graduated all five starting members from last season.
