    Vandalism raised its ugly head in Kimball on the first weekend of February – and the targets of the vandalism were very unusual and different. Cantrell Funeral Home, along with the Four Winds Golf Course pro shop and the Windbreak Bar and Grill building, were areas hard hit with graffiti.     The Kimball School Board conducted a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and will hold another at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. Both meetings involve the applicants to become the district’s next superintendent. On Tuesday night, board members reviewed in executive session the 14 applications and looked over the references from the Nebraska School Board Association.     Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Director Jim Macy last week announced $6 million in grants to support 161 environmentally themed projects across the state. The Kimball area received a significant $102,334 chunk of those grants for Keep Kimball Beautiful initiatives. That total exceeds those of grants awarded for the larger Panhandle communities of Scottsbluff-Gering and Sidney.     Kimball High School civics student Austin Lulf participated in County Government Day last week. It left an impression on him. Lulf said he "found visiting the jail cell was the most interesting.     Members of the Lions Club of Kimball presented a $5,861 check Tuesday to Patty Shaw for the Andy Shaw Memorial. The money was raised when the Lions Club sold tickets for the raffle of the late Dan Kinnison's carpentry tools to benefit the memorial. Patty, Andy Shaw's mother, said she was pleased with the amount and said it would help lots of people battling cancer.     The Kimball High Wrestlers were busy at the WTC/SPVA Tournament this past week at Bridgeport, and will head to North Platte St Pats for District competition this Friday-Saturday.     The Kimball boys finished 4th in this year's Western Trails Conference Basketball Tournament play, losing 37-34 to Morrill in the consolation finals on Saturday.     The Kimball Hight girls were eliminated from advancing to additional play at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff with a first round loss at Bayard in Western Trail Conference Tournament play this past week. Unlike the first meeting between these two teams, when Kimball won 51-46 at Bayard, the hosting Lady Tigers dominated in winning 60-41.
