  • Kimball graduate named UNMC student of the month

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

Despite excelling in her studies, aspiring to be a yogi and being named the UNMC College of Medicine January student of the month, Constance Mietus, a 2005 graduate of Kimball High School maintains that she is actually pretty boring. “I feel really blessed by the opportunity,” Mietus said. “This year I was chosen as the January student of the month for our Dean Dr. Britigan’s monthly InterCOM Newsletter.” She believes that her nomination for the student of the month came from peers based on her involvement in extracurricular activitie...

  • Speech team places again

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

The talented and passionate Kimball High School speech team, who faced some tough competition at the Perkins County competition on Saturday, Jan. 30, had a great day according to coach Jennifer Dillinger and came home in fourth place out of 21 teams. “At this particular meet, we were competing head-to-head against Class A/B schools. That is always difficult for us, because they have so many more students than we do. A team like Ogallala brings 50 students, while Kimball was competing with 12 on Saturday,” Dillinger said. “The fact that our 1...

  • BPW considers refunds

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

The Kimball Board of Public Works was asked to review their utility deposit policy during their most recent board meeting, on Monday, Jan. 26. The policy was questioned by longtime resident Harold Farrar, who was told he would have a $100 deposit when he recently moved his City of Kimball utility account. “I recently moved to an apartment, but have lived here for over twenty years,” Farrar said. “I’ve had my utility bill taken out of my account basically since I moved to town.” Farrar continued that to his knowledge there had never been an i...

  • Friends and Neighbors: The Shermans

    Dawn Fossand|Feb 4, 2016

A great sense of humor and an obvious admiration for each other keep Jowain and Linda Sherman on the move. Jowain said of their continuous busy lifestyle that they "would rather wear out – than rust out." They have lived in Kimball for 15 years, but it is Jowain's second time in town. "This is my second tour here. I graduated from 1960 from the old high school," he said. Jowain's father was with an oil well surveying company, which caused the family to move a lot. His family moved to Kimball i...

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

With two years of Pinewood Derbies under their belt, local Cub Scout Pack 31 is ready to take it to the next level and are offering an open class following their cub scout derby. The open class is being offered as a fun, community event as well as a fund raiser, according the Cub Master Josh Gillming. “The fee for the open class will go directly to the scouts to be used to purchase books, uniforms, supplies and will pay for summer camps,” he said. The scouts will begin with a block of wood, four wheels and four nails. From there, they will des...

  • LTTE: Setting the record straight

    Feb 4, 2016

I would like to set the record straight on the article in last week’s Observer. It was titled “ I-80 emergency leads to methamphetamine arrest”. The article states that “Both the Kimball County Ambulance along with the Dix First responders were paged to assist. Although they were paged on two separate occasions first responders out of Dix never responded to the call.” I felt that this was biased on the source’s part. Dix Fire and Rescue is a volunteer service, as all are in this area. They take time away from whatever they are doing to go...

    Larry Nelson|Feb 4, 2016

Life as it was known in the United States, changed on the 7th of December 1941. Our Nation was struck by enemy forces. Some 2500 people were killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor. The staggering amount of destruction, damage, and slaughter was not soon to be forgotten by most Americans. One way to do one’s part in taking the fight to the opposing forces was to “join up”. Raymond L. Davis (Ray) was in Watertown, New York. (This is the city adjacent to Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Light Infantry now.) He wanted to join the US Army. Those...

  • Kimball boys have a strong showing

    Tom Southard|Feb 4, 2016

A strong showing by the Kimball High boys this past weekend including a surprising upset win over North Platte St Pats. Despite playing well on the home court Friday evening, they let one slip away in an overtime 67-62 loss to visiting Sutherland, but then came back strong on the road Saturday to upset the favored St Pats Irish 58-53 at their house. Coach Luke Dea praised the play of his team both nights. “We played very good both nights, but just didn’t finish out on Friday against Sutherland” Dea said. “We got outstanding effort by all of...

    Tom Southard|Feb 4, 2016

A huge win for the Kimball High Lady Longhorns as they avenged an earlier loss to Mitchell coming out on top 59-42 in a battle of two top ten ranked C-l teams this past week. In a contest played at Mitchell on January 8, the hosting Lady Tigers won out 44-42. In the rematch at Kimball, the hosts made sure they took care of business jumping out to an early lead and were in control from start to finish. Kimball received notice that they had moved into the number 10 spot in the Omaha World...

  • Lady Coyotes best Minatare

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

The Lady Coyotes won their home conference game against the Minatare Lady Indians 52-22 on Saturday, Jan. 30. The Potter-Dix girls began pummeling their opponents early in the first quarter, racking up 28 nearly unanswered points while the Lady Indians got on the board with just two. In the second the Minatare ladies rallied, adding seven to the board but were stilled outscored, with the Lady Coyotes gaining eight. The second half showed more of the same, with the Coyotes scoring 11 and holding...

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

The Banner County lady Wildcats split last weekend’s games with a close win over Guernsey-Sunrise on Friday followed by a loss to Morrill on Saturday. Friday’s game got serious very quickly. The Lady Wildcats closed the first quarter with 20 and their hosts, 11. The Lady Vikings outscored the Banner County girls in the second quarter, adding five to the board but allowing just two from the Lady Wildcats. Coming back from half-time the Lady Wildcats came out with renewed vigor and added 11 to the board while the Guernsey-Sunrise girls were hel...

  • Two medalists at Mitchell

    Tom Southard|Feb 4, 2016

Kimball had two medal winners at the Mitchell Invitational Wrestling Tournament with Cody Kirby finishing 3rd at 220 pounds and Garrett Pedersen 4th at 106. As a team, Kimball placed 11th in the field of 15 teams with 26 points. Coach Wade Brashear said "The competition was good. Overall we wrestled decent, but our inexperience shows. As a team we have shown good improvement, but with a tough D-4 District coming up, we must continue to strive to get better. This week we were without our 285...

  • Tough week for Kimball JV

  • Lady Longhorns split weekend

    Tom Southard|Feb 4, 2016

The Lady Longhorns started the weekend off like they are accustomed to with a win over visiting Sutherland Friday night putting up a final score of 65-48 on the home court score board, but then a rare falter on the road to North Platte St Pats Saturday, losing 61-52 in the battle of two state ranked teams . Madison Biesecker got the Horns started Friday night hitting a 16 footer and following that seconds later with a rebound put-back basket and Kimball took a 14-9 1st quarter-lead, were on top 30-24 at half time, then picked it up in the...

  • Coyotes fall to Minatare

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 4, 2016

The Potter-Dix Coyotes, 6-9 for the season, lost to the Minatare Indians, 8-6, for a conference game on Saturday, Jan. 30, in the second of three games the two teams will play against one another. The Coyotes got off to a strong start scoring 13 in the first quarter and holding their opponents to seven. Roles reversed in the second quarter with the Indians gaining double digits, 11, to Potter-Dix’s six. The Coyotes came back from halftime to add another six to the board but they were outplayed by the Mnatare boys, who added 10 to their board. T...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Feb 4, 2016

Lots of area sports activities this past week but the snowy weather has cancelled or postponed some of the scheduled events at the start of this week. The Kimball girl’s win over Mitchell was big, but their loss to North Platte St Pats was disappointing. The Kimball boys made up for the girl’s loss however by upsetting the St Pats boys. The Kimball girls had moved into the Omaha World Herald’s C-l top 10 prior to the Mitchell game, but after their win over the then ranked Lady Tigers holding the number 8 spot, Kimball is now 9th and Mitch...
