Since Kimball ambulance service paired with Regional West’s ambulance service, Kimball County has saved money. Ken Hunter, Kimball Health Services CEO, and Chief Nursing Officer Cheryl Delaplane met with the county commissioners at their regular meeting Jan. 15 to discuss overall improvements regarding ambulance service. For nearly a century, the U.S. Government, American Wild Horse Campaign, and many others have fought for and against the rights of wild horses roaming the Red Desert of Wyoming. A Wyoming Federal Court ruled against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in court earlier this month, Jan. 10, 2019. Usually, Drew Beisecker takes Kimball Longhorns basketball photos for the Western Nebraska Observer. But on June 20, he captured these images from his Kimball home of the only total lunar eclipse of 2019 in the night skies across North America and much of the world. As a cold front rolled through Monday evening, Jan. 21, school and office closures or late starts were announced for many in the Nebraska Panhandle on Tuesday morning. Once again we have a “big kitty” in our area. What appears to be mountain lion tracks at Oliver Reservoir were found after a snowstorm earlier this month. No reports of a mountain lions have been made this year, but the tracks don’t lie. Multiple lake goers on the west side of Oliver reported seeing the tracks this past week. Mountain lions are nearly always uniformly tan in color with black tipped tails and dark fur on the back of the ears. Until they reach about a year old, they have dark spots and a dark-ringed tail. Orvile Norman Tuzicka Jr., age 66, of Versailles, Missouri, formerly of Kimball, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, January 18, 2019, while he was at work. He was born October 7, 1952, in Sterling, Colorado, a son of Orvile N. Tuzicka Sr. and Theora May "Teddy" Pierce Tuzicka. On October 5, 1974, in Kimball, Nebraska, Orvile, who preferred to be called "Jr.," was united in marriage to Lora J. Westby. Lora survives at their home. The SPVA Conference Basketball Tournament play was completed this past week and the Bridgeport boys and North Platte St Pats girls emerged as champions. The Kimball boys finished 7th after losing 60-59 to Perkins County in double overtime, and the Kimball girls wound up 5th thanks in large part to Carli Wurdeman tying a school record for 3 point field goals in a game with 8! The sharp shooting junior guard wound up with 29 points in that 61-26 win over Perkins County, which also tied her for 8th in the tough weekend of games with Sutherland... Full story
Two area pool players earned cash prizes for their top performances in the American Poolplayers Association 8-Ball Fun and Cash tournament recently at the Silver Dollar and Fahey's Public House in Sidney. Karrie Brawner from Kimball finished in second place and Marty Couch from Lodgepole took third. It was a disappointing loss in an action packed and exciting SPVA Tournament game for the Kimball High boys as they lost 60-59 in double overtime play this past Thursday evening at the College in North Platte. The Kimball High Wrestling Team had three medal winners at the Dogger Invitational Tournament held in Lingle, Wyoming, this past weekend. Jordan Cluff at 120 and Toby McManigal at 220 both finished in the runner-up spot at their respective weights, and Izaak Rohde at 182 brought home sixth place. Jordan Cluff registered a pin and a 7-4 decision before losing 12-4 in the championship match to a Cheyenne East wrestler. A 49-25 first round loss to Chase County and a 61-26 win over Perkins County left the Kimball High girls in 5th place in this past week's SPVA Conference Tournament play and leaves them with a season record of 6 wins and 7 losses.
