  • Repair or resell Kimball Event Center

    Tonia Copeland|Jan 21, 2016

A continual need for updates and repairs to the Kimball Event Center in addition to waning reservations for the facility has some Kimball City Council members questioning if further investments are wise. Roofing, at a cost of approximately $100,000, was the latest in a long and growing list of repairs that have been necessary for the aging building. In addition to the new roof, previous administrations have updated the HVAC system and made repairs as needed. City Administrator Daniel Ortiz said during the Jan. 5 City Council meeting that...

    Dawn Fossand|Jan 21, 2016

Kimball county has been receiving Juvenile Justice grants from the State of Nebraska, for the last few years according to County Attorney, Dave Wilson. The state receives the funding through a federal program called the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, from the Crime Commission. “This is fairly new program and we are just getting into this process,” Wilson said, “but I think it will be good for the youth of our county.” The state emphasizes diversion programs for the youth who get into trouble. Wilson has been to several...

With two more wins over the weekend, the Kimball High Lady Longhorns ran their season record to 10-2. Latest victims of the Kimball ladies were Bridgeport on Friday (71-42) and Gordon-Rushville on Saturday (72-57). No problem either night for the Kimball girls as they went past the 70 point mark both evenings. They had a slow start with Bridgeport falling behind 14-9 but ended up on top at the quarter 15-14. They got things rolling in the second period out scoring the visitors 23-10 to take a...

  • Kimball boys fall

    Tom Southard|Jan 21, 2016

The Kimball High boys suffered losses to Bridgeport and Gordon-Rushville the past weekend in their final tuneup for the SPVA Conference Tournament that takes place this week. The Longhorns fell to state ranked Bridgeport 66-52 on Friday evening and lost 56-44 to Gordon-Rushville on Saturday. Bridgeport is big, by any class, with only 3 players less than 6'1" on their 15-member varsity roster, which includes four players at 6'6". Once again, Kimball's smaller lineup played hard and aggressive...

    Staff Report|Jan 21, 2016

Potter-Dix got off to a slow start Friday night, but kicked things into high gear in the second quarter and went on to roll past cross-county rival Leyton, 47-32. The Lady Warriors (6-4) opened with a 5-0 lead as the Lady Coyotes (9-1) struggled, before Payge Hoffman's layup with 5:53 left in the first quarter ended the scoring drought. Leyton kept Potter-Dix at bay for most of the first quarter, getting a pair of Diedra Waite foul shots and an Abbe Draper jumper for a 10-6 lead with 2:49 left...

  • Kimball picks up win at Potter

    Tom Southard|Jan 21, 2016

Kimball picked up wins at Potter-Dix this past week in contests featuring the neighboring communities. The stands were full and were treated to some good high school basketball as the Class D-2 Coyotes gave a good accounting of themselves against the larger C-l Kimball. The Potter-Dix girls came into the contest ranked number 7 in the state C-2 rankings, but got off to a very slow start trailing 17-3 at the quarter break, and were down 28-12 at half time. They got their game going in the third...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Jan 21, 2016

I covered a lot of basketball this past week, 11 games total, before getting back in the saddle again Monday for the start of the SPVA Conference Tournament play. I enjoyed getting to take in a game at Potter once again after limiting my writing to mostly just Kimball activities a few years back as I try in vain to simply retire from the business of writing sport stories. Trust me, it is going to happen. The games between Potter-Dix and Kimball were very competitive for both the girls and boys and Class D-2 Coyotes have a lot of talent for...
