    Interviews for the city of Kimball special projects coordinator/economic developer position are tentatively planned for the week of Jan. 13. City Administrator Dan Dean told the Observer on Tuesday that the city is conducting background checks before it interviews candidates for the key post.   • School Board Goes Paperless

    The Kimball School Board planned a special public meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the high school to train the board on the SPARQ program that will result in paperless board meetings. SPARQ was expected to conduct the 45 minute training via phone or webinar. The board approved this new program Nov. 1.     A team of 10 individuals from the Evangelical Free Church in Kimball are heading south to start their new year off by building a house. Star and Greg Harvie will lead the team to work for a week in Haiti building a house for a single mother with 5 children. The cinder block house will be 10 by 20 feet, basically four walls, no plumbing or interior amenities, just a simple structure, although the single mother does own the land that the house will be built on.     On the first Saturday of every month, a growing group of women meet to quilt and share stories of their quilting adventures. At the gathering, a member will "show and tell" the other members about a new or unique technique such as how to put binding on,"paper piecing" or hand embroidering on quilts.     Helen Joan Johnson, daughter of the late Alex and Elizabeth, (Engstrom) Christiansen of Kimball, passed away on January 6 near her home in Butte, Montana. She would have been 85 years old on February 1. Joan was a 1953 graduate of Kimball County High School. She later attended the University of Nebraska/Lincoln, and taught in the Kimball and other area Public Schools.     A lot of area basketball teams take part in Holiday Tournaments after the Christmas break but Kimball takes a bit more of a break and returned to the hardwoods this past Tuesday with a trip to Big Springs to battle South Platte. This Saturday, they are at home hosting Chase County, and then on Tuesday, they are at Potter-Dix.     The Kimball Wrestling Club held its Federation Wrestling Tournament this past Sunday – the K-Town Takedown – at the Kimball High gymnasium and attracted a large field of 178 wrestlers, according to one of the organizers, Bob Culek. The parking lots on all sides of the Kimball school were filled with vehicles from near and far!
