  • 2016 in review part 2

    Jan 5, 2017

The second half of 2016 was a whirlwind of activity in Kimball. Businesses opened, grew and closed, a fugitive from Florida was apprehended, Kimball hired a new doctor, lost an administrator and a police chief in the same month, and offered those positions to new prospects just two months later. Kimball saw changes in the size of the Western Nebraska Observer and saw changes in leadership nationally, statewide and locally. The futures of the Kimball Event Center and Keep Kimball Beautiful were uncertain; the Kimball Ambulance Service was given...

  • Oversized load

    Aleta Pearson|Jan 5, 2017

Although this huge quonset traveled only five miles, it traversed both dirt and paved roads, skimmed under the Interstate 80 overpass, inched up and over a hill of pasture and trudged through a field of cornstalks before coming to rest in its temporary site until spring. Chris Haack purchased the 30x60 quonset from an auction southeast of Kimball recently but because the size was so large, Z & S Construction had to weld a frame and wheels onto the building for stability and moving purposes. The...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Andy Bremer

    Aleta Pearson|Jan 5, 2017

If you were to run into Andy Bremer when he was off duty, you might not realize he has been in law enforcement for nearly fifteen years. The consensus around town is that Bremer is not just an exceptional cop, he's a great guy. Husband, father, son and friend to everyone he meets, this man has a good-natured character coupled with integrity. Bremer grew up on the family ranch in the northern panhandle with the dreams of becoming a Catholic priest, thanks to his grandmother's influence. When he w...

  • Across the fence

    Tim Nolting|Jan 5, 2017

When I chose 'Across the Fence' as the by-line for this column I envisioned neighbors casually leaning against a shared fence, spending a little time just visiting. Maybe the talk would be about the weather (my dad's favorite) or family history, perhaps comments on world news or local scuttlebutt. Whatever the topic, I hoped it would be something worthwhile, interesting, maybe a bit humorous or perhaps a little more somber and reflective, but generally of some merit. My dad and I used to have...

  • Kimball ambulance service questions answered

    Tonia Copeland|Jan 5, 2017

Much of the public is still uncertain about the future of the ambulance service in Kimball. Though a new contract has been signed, a new partnership made, the service can remain vastly unchanged according to Kimball County Commissioner Tim Nolting. Following the steady five-year climb of property tax requirements needed for the county-run ambulance service, the board of commissioners sought an in-depth study of the service as well as viable alternatives. The Paramedic Foundation was contacted by the Nebraska EMS & Training Program to conduct...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Jan 5, 2017

With the dawning of a new year many of us are cleaning out closets, cleaning out friends lists and just preparing in general for the new year. I have started a new year with lofty ideals and intentions for more years than I care to count. There is the lose weight/eat healthy resolution and the read more or stress less goals. I have lost, and regained, several times. I have enjoyed new books and found creative ways to diminish stress due to these goals. In years past I have cleared my closets and cupboards of unused and unloved items, donating...

  • Veterans History Project

    Larry Nelson|Jan 5, 2017

The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. A situation that happened in several homes in the late 1960's... a person who has graduated from high school wants to set out on his/her own course in life...his/her parents have a different plan. Dennis Joynt completed a semester of college in...

  • Jordan Cluff double winner for Kimball wrestling

    Tom Southard|Jan 5, 2017

The Kimball High wrestling team hosted Hershey and Chase County in a double dual wrestling match to close out the pre-Christmas part of the season with Jordan Cluff, a double winner for the home team. Cluff, wrestling at 106 pounds, pinned his Hershey opponent in :55 seconds, then moved up a weight class to 113 and pinned his Chase County opponent in 5:01. Kimball went up against Hershey in their first dual of the night and lost 51-30, but actually won three of the five matches that took place...
