    The area experienced quite the year in 2014. The Kimball Oil Derrick was resurrected in October, Daria Anderson- Faden was the first female elected as a Kimball County Commissioner in November, and a whole lot more.   • Public works board looks at landfill, landlord agreement

    The Kimball board of public works discussed the city's landfill, electricity and a landlord agreement at the Dec. 23 meeting. The room was packed with over 30 people present due to certain agenda items. There was discussion concerning whether or not the board should allow the landfill to accept trash from a company outside of Kimball County.   • Guess the Santa Claus contest winner

    Erika Loy, left, was the winner of the Western Nebraska Observer's "Guess the Santa Claus" contest held in December. Loy was one of four who correctly identified each "Santa." The names of the four who correctly guessed all nine of the "Santas" were placed in a box, and her name was drawn out.   • Reminder: Drip or run water during cold temperatures

    Due to the freezing temperatures, the City of Kimball would like to remind people to leave a small stream of cold water running in your home, especially at night, when you will be gone for an extended time, or when no water is being used. A small stream approximately the size of a pencil lead should be enough to prevent water freeze-up which can break pipes and water meters.     In 1937 Winifred Johnston graduated from Beth El School of Nursing in Colorado Springs, Colo. The head of the school at that time insisted that the graduates give back to their country by registering with the Red Cross so that when emergencies happened, they could be available to help the sick and/or wounded.     Arthur L. Heim, 73, of Potter, died at the Aurora South Medical Center in Aurora, Colo., on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. Arthur “Art” Lee Heim was born in Moundridge, Kan., on March 29, 1941, the son of Carl and Hattie (Hickman) Heim. He moved with his family at an early age to Friend, Neb., where he received his education. He moved to Kimball in 1956 and began working in the oil fields.     6-14 boys basketball The Kimball boys basketball team had a season for the record books. The Longhorns earned a bid to state and finished 22-4 overall, tying the school record for most victories in a season. They also won the Western Trails Conference tournament for the eighth consecutive year. Mike Daum set a new school record of points scored with 653 and finished second all-time in scoring.
