  • Bags' Bar Golf Tournament Results

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Aug 20, 2020

I gave you a short brief on the 2020 Bag's Bar Golf Tournament in last week's Observer sports. But this week I have the entire results of the two day scramble held at the Potter Golf Course thanks to Kristi Jung. There were 28 four-person teams with the team of Doran Bush, Lane Juelfs, Morgan Haupt and Lance Juelfs winning the championship flight easily with their score of 76, and as reported last week, Lance Juelfs scored a hole-in-one on both days for his winning team! There was a tie for...

  • 1 Tournament, 2 Holes In One For Lance Juelfs

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Aug 13, 2020

At the time of this writing, and unless I hear a change, we will have no Nebraska football as the Big 10 has voted not to play. What I heard on Monday was that only Nebraska and Iowa voted to go ahead with the fall season, but I guess there could be a change yet. Interesting and disappointing. High School Practice Is On I did get word on Monday that the Kimball High fall sports are scheduled to proceed and fall sports practices began this past Monday. Practice time now until school starts on...

The 29th annual Kimball Hospital Foundation Golf Classic is in the books as a record breaking event having attracted the most entries ever, according to the chairman, Mr. Kerry Ferguson. This year's event had 36 four-person teams for a total of 144 golfers, the most ever. Ferguson said, "It was truly a great day for the foundation with this great turnout. We had near perfect weather the entire day, I think everyone enjoyed themselves, and all of the volunteer helpers did such a good job. "I...

  • First Place Is Payton's Place

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Jul 30, 2020

Not a lot to share with you readers this week. The coronavirus played havoc with the Nebraska West Nebraska All Star Football game, which had to be canceled when a member of the East Team tested positive. The volleyball match went on as scheduled and the West Team won in five straight sets. Payton Wise I can boast once again on the play of our Payton Wise who did very well in the final two tournaments of the Panhandle Junior Tour. She shot a round of 79, despite not putting her best, at Gering...

  • No Place Like Home

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jul 23, 2020

Cameron Wynne, the son of Brian Wynne who was a 1997 Kimball High grad, and an outstanding athlete for the Longhorns, has signed to return home to Nebraska to play out his collegiate baseball. Cam, as he goes by, grew up in Lincoln and played his high school baseball at Lincoln High before playing 2 years of baseball for Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. His next move was to sign with Texas A&M. When the COVID-19 scare came along and everything came to a halt, Cam went...

  • Glo Ball Tourney Gets Glowing Review

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Jul 23, 2020

The 3rd annual James L. Eatmon Masonic Lodge golf tournament was held this past Saturday night at the Four Winds Golf Course, and yes, I said Saturday NIGHT! This fun format consists of a cross country laid-out out course during daylight hours, with a break for outstanding food prepared by Dave Klinkhammer, and served at the course, and then 9 more holes of golf in the dark using glo balls! This year’s tournament attracted 20 four-person teams, or 80 golfers, and according to the chairman, Kevin Wynne, “It went very well and seemed like eve...

  • Catching Up With The Guys At Vince's Scramble

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jul 16, 2020

What a Great weekend of watching some outstanding golf! I put in several hours following golfers involved in the 11th annual Vince's Corner ABCD Double Draw Scramble out at the Four Winds Golf Course, breathing good fresh, Hot air, but finding lots of shady spots where I could watch golfers come in and go out, with lots of exciting approach shots, pets, and long drives. On top of that I got to see and talk with a lot of people I haven't seen since at least last year, or longer. Many good...

  • Payton Stays In The Swing

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jul 16, 2020

With the Nebraska fall sports still a huge question mark, Kimball High Junior Payton Wise at least got to see some competitive action on the golf course this past week by playing in the Nebraska Amateur Golf Tournament held at the Scottsbluff Country Club. The two-day event attracted 48 girls and Payton finished tied for 17th overall with her rounds of 88-82=170. Wise is staying active, though, and attended both basketball and volleyball camps in the last couple of weeks....

  • Big Mike Continues To Impress On ESPN

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jul 16, 2020

Our Kimball guy, Mike Daum, had two more good showings in The Basketball Tournament being played in Columbus, Ohio, that was shown on ESPN. You hopefully caught the story last week of him being named Player of the Game in their opening week over War Tampa 76-53, when he led his House of Paign team with 21 points and 13 rebounds. This past week he repeated in game two as Player of the Game in the 76-68 win over the hosting Carmen’s Crew, an Ohio State team playing on their own stomping ground, and they were the number one seed and defending c...

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jul 16, 2020

The 11th annual Vince’s Corner ABCD Double Draw Golf Scramble is in the books and the 132 golfers who made up the 33 four man teams enjoyed two days of hot, but calm weather, with no storms, and a golf course that brought raves from many of the out of town golfers. It all started with a Friday night get together at the Wind Break Restaurant where the drawing for Saturday’s play took place, and was repeated Saturday evening for Sunday play. In the two day final results, the top honor went to A golfer Andrew Brown as the hometown guy fin...

  • A Great Kimball Golf Weekend

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Jun 25, 2020

What a great golf weekend at the Four Winds Golf Course this past Saturday-Sunday. Amazing the number of people that turn out for this annual golfing attraction, not only in the number of 3-man teams, which ended up at 35 when one team did not show, but also in the number of people who come out to follow their favorite teams, both days! This year the weather was near-perfect both days, and the course was groomed to Perfection. I heard so many positive comments on the Kimball course. It is so gratifying to see the number of all-family teams ente...

  • Hittin' The Weights

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Jun 11, 2020

Kimball High athletes were back in the school's spacious weight room this past week after the NSAA gave permission for Nebraska schools to open up their weight rooms at the same time, while still watching and using the 6-foot social distancing rule as much as possible and wiping down all equipment used. I made a trip to the Kimball High weight room this past week and with permission from Coach Ben Aarestad, who was overseeing the 7:30 to 9 a.m. lifting session. I observed for a short time and...

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|May 28, 2020

Thanks to the COVID-19 scare ,there was no end of the school year awards night this year at the Kimball High so the Kimball High athletes missed out on this annual tribute as well. We published an entire list of accomplishments the graduating class achieved a couple of weeks back, but I want to give special recognition to Beau Hanks and Carli Wurdeman for being named Outstanding boy and girl Senior Athletes. They both also received the WTC scholarships and WTC Scholar Athlete awards and both were 4 year 12 sport athletes! Weight Room Opening...
