This Sunday’s 60-minute movie will tell the story of a Nebraska decorated veteran who served as a gunner in 58 missions during World War II. The Kimball County Commissioners appointed Austin Garner as the new veterans service officer at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting. Garner recently returned to Nebraska after spending time in the Army overseas, where he was a flight paramedic. He was discharged in July. Prior to his time in the Army, Garner served the LaVista Fire Department as a firefighter and paramedic. Since his return to Kimball, he recently joined the Kimball County Ambulance Service. The Lady Coyotes (12-2) won a nip and tuck battle in game one, roared back from a 7-1 deficit in game two and jumped out to the early lead in game three to sweep visiting Creek Valley 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16. The Kimball County Veterans Service Committee is one step closer to recommending a candidate as the next veterans service officer after a meeting last Thursday. The committee had received two applications for the position as of the Sept. 8 deadline, before extending that deadline to Thursday to receive at least one more application. The Kimball County Commissioners approved a lengthy set of specifications for the potential purchase of an ambulance at last week’s meeting. The specifications approved number more than 80 pages and may be viewed by contacting the county clerk’s office. Injuries and lack of participation have ended the Banner County High School football season prematurely, and could put its future in doubt. Banner County activities director Kari Gifford confirmed Monday that the school canceled the remaining six games on its 2015 schedule. The property tax for Kimball County will see the slightest of increases in the current fiscal year. Property tax for land valued at $100,000 will go up 32 cents in a budget passed Tuesday by the county commissioners. The property tax request from the commissioners went up from $3,155,388 in 2014-15 to $3,373,150 in 2015-16. The property tax rate moved from 0.471095 last year to 0.471416 this year. The Kimball County commissioners approved bylaw changes for the county visitors committee at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting. Prior to Tuesday, the bylaws required that two members of the seven-member visitors committee be involved in overnight lodging in the county. The Kimball County Commissioners inked an agreement with a local landowner for temporary use of a portion of his land while a road is repaired. The commissioners approved an agreement with Troy Carruthers to use a portion of his land surrounding County Road 49 south of Interstate 80 as a detour while the road is repaired. The heavy rains caused flooding on the road earlier this month and made a portion of it unpassable, said County Highway Superintendent Dave Hotell.
