  • 'Born To Rein' Worth Seeing In Kimball

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 18, 2024

Good morning! Beautiful spring weather, for today at least. Stinking high winds and tumbling tumble weeds, welcome to Nebraska! Today, April 18th, there is No School at home, but the middle school track team will be headed to Kimball. There is NO School tomorrow either. Believe there is some ACT testing going on. Anyway, there will be a “Women As Warriors” self defense seminar at WNCC tonight from 6-9 p.m. For more information and to register, please call 635-6700. Also beginning at 6 p.m. there will be an informative Medicare Program at the...

  • April Showers Bring Snow Plowers

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 11, 2024

Good morning, and as my daughter said last week, something she picked up ... April showers bring snow plowers, or whatever. Yep, near 70 degrees one day and a blizzard the next, actually clear blue skies and almost 50, then clouds, high winds, and blizzard by morning. Some folks are still without electricity as I write this and I know they are working around the clock to repair all of the damage and downed poles. Hopefully that is the last one for this spring. Many schools were closed Monday, including ours. Good call, people. The book sale at...

  • Banner County FFA Students Finishing Up At Lincoln

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 4, 2024

Good morning! Happy April and hopefully some showers, although March ended with hail at my house. The weather is so weird. When I think about a new month already, I just can’t believe it is going so fast, I’m not having that much fun. A fourth of 2024 is already gone. Graduations are not that far off and a lot of scholarship information is posted online. Today, April 4th, the FFA students are still in Lincoln for the state convention. The JAG conference was cancelled last week along with one other cancellation. Disappointment for those inv...

  • Lots of Events, Easter And Otherwise, In The Works This Week

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 28, 2024

Good morning! Man, has the month of March flown by or what? This week goes out the door with Easter this Sunday, and I think it is out like a lamb with about 60 degrees predicted with clouds. So we know the real reason for the season, but we are also aware of several Easter egg hunts surrounding our area. We will get to those here shortly, but first today is March 28th and there is high school track at Bayard, the Honor Society Induction at the school at 5 p.m., and the JAG students in Lincoln for Legistative Day. Lakota Language Classes will a...

  • Banner County Speech Team Heading To State Competition

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 21, 2024

Good morning! Beautiful weather, and we are sure ready for it, right? Today, March 21st there are two happenings that I think you might be interested in. One is at Backaracks in Scottsbluff this evening at 5:30 and is titled “Equal Pay Day.” It is hosted by Panhandle Business and Professional Women and is expected to end at 7 p.m. The other one is by speaker Robert Zemanek on “DNA for the Genealogist” and will be held at the Gering Public Library Council Chambers at 2 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. The Close-Up group is still out of town until t...

  • George The Cat Attacks St. Paddy Gnome

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 14, 2024

Good morning! Typical spring weather here in western Nebraska. Nice and pleasant, windy, with rain and snow! This week and weekend many people will be celebrating St. Paddy’s Day; here is to you and your fun and safety if you are one of them. I have a little green St. Paddy gnome that my cat George has gotten a hold of several times this past month. His little four leaf clover and buckle have been glued on more than once. Darn cat. The schoolhouse has very little going on compared to how their weeks usually go. Tomorrow, March 15th, there w...

  • Hardin, Patrol To Hold Meeting At Banner School

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 7, 2024

Good morning and happy Windy month of March! Nice kite weather if anyone does that anymore. Before we start the weekend, today, March 7, is the beginning of a Lakota language learning class that will be taught at the Scottsbluff High School. Beverly Running Bear from Black Hills State University will be teaching the classes through the 13th of March at 6 p.m. Friday, March 8th is an eventful day with a lot going on. There will be no school at Banner County School. State Sen. Brian Hardin and the Nebraska State Patrol will hold a meeting in the...

  • Lamb Or Lion? What Do You Think?

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 29, 2024

Good morning! Well after today February is a thing of the past. This past week has been filled with spring and winter days buffeted by winds with speeds up to 40 miles an hour. So the expected wind of 18 miles per hour for March 1st seems pretty mild, bringing the question of lamb or lion? What do you all think? Winter sports continue to wind down with great year end finishes for both speech and boys varsity basketball. On March 1st, Friday, the annual FFA silent auction will take place at 5:30 p.m. I hear that the FFA group had quite a display...

  • Wildcat Wyatt Reichenberg Wins Three Matches, Places Second At State

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 22, 2024

Good morning and welcome to the last day of February, seems impossible! We do have one extra day this year, so there is that. Congratulations to Banner County wrestler Wyatt Reichenberg for his 2nd place win at state! Does not appear to be much going on at the schoolhouse this week. However, tomorrow, February 23rd, will be a regular day of school with no sports, just to give everyone a breather. The Gering Library will host Board Game Night that evening at 6 p.m., and the Midwest Theater will...

  • Wildcat Wyatt Reichenberg Wrestling At State

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 15, 2024

Good morning! Lovin' Nebraska with flashes of near 60 degrees one day and 6 inches of snow the next!! This last blast of winter brought some pretty good moisture though, so that was appreciated. Interesting to see what the rest of the month will bring us. Here today, midway through February, the 15th, there is a Homeschool program out at the Wildcat Hills recreation area beginning at 10 a.m., and here at school there is an early OUT. Students will head home early for parent-teacher conferences....

  • Phil's Forecast Would Be Different In Nebraska

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 1, 2024

Good morning! It’s February but feels like May! Least for awhile, and how about that Punsutawney Phil? If he were here in Nebraska I do believe his weather predictions would be quite different, but I still have high odds for more winter. Safer that way. Well, here at home on February 1st we have the annual spelling bee at the school at 12:30 p.m. and everyone is invited to go watch. Also the high school wrestling team will be competing at a MAC conference tournament in Bridgeport. That evening the Western Nebraska Art Center will host an o...

  • January Sports Winding Down For Wildcats During Our 'Heatwave'

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 25, 2024

Good morning! I hope you are enjoying this heat wave that we are having, nothing below zero, at least as far we can tell for now. Personally I have never been very fond of January, partly due to the weather. After the 1st, it seems to go on forever! Even with all of that, it is hard to believe that this is the last week before February says “hello!” However, starting this final week, tonight January 25, the Midwest Theater will host a musical comedy as the Three Redneck Tenors perform at 7 p.m. It also is Adult Anime Night for Adults at the...

  • Family In Nevada, Missouri & Oklahoma Getting Weather Like Ours

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 18, 2024

Good morning, and wow has it ever been cold! From here in Nebraska where we are accustomed to extreme weather, I have been in touch with family in Nevada, Missouri and Oklahoma – and they have all been experiencing weather much like ours. With that said, it still doesn’t make me feel much better about it all! Thankfully, I am one of the lucky ones who does not HAVE to go out, and I do not have animals that are out there and needing care. For those of you that do have to be out, please take care. I think that we are looking to have somewhat of...

  • New Year Begins And So Do School Days In Banner County

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 4, 2024

Holy cow! Just like that we have a New Year! New do-overs to get it right. Not a whole lot going on, but here is what I’ve got. Today, January 4th, 2024 there is a New Year Animal Camp out at the Riverside Discovery center from 9:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. with a pizza lunch provided on site. Register at the gift shop please. Yesterday the staff at Banner County School returned, with or without smiles on their faces. Those vacations are always too short. The students returned today, and probably are ready to be back, and with tomorrow (the 5th) to be...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 14, 2023

Good morning! Wow, has that wind been getting after it, and the tumble weeds are not just tumbling, they are taking flight! I know we need the moisture, but personally I hope it holds off until the holidays are over. It would make travel a lot easier. Have any of you ever seen the Big Horn sheep that make the Wildcat Hills their home? I see them a lot, and have happened upon about a half dozen accidents involving them. Well, a few days ago as I was headed north, one of them streaked across Hwy. 71 headed west. He was really moving as he...

  • With All This Going On, Chistmas Is In The Air

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 7, 2023

Good morning! I have to say that so far December has been great. The sunrise Monday morning was stunning. Hope you were able to see it. After the snow on Sunday and my near miss with a stop sign, slush and ice, I definitely appreciate dry roads, and I am sure you do too! We are sorry to hear of the passing of Lyle Huffman, long time Banner County resident, and our sympathies are extended to his family. Here we go with another busy week. Tonight! – December 7th – the 6th graders will show you their marketing skills at the Sixth Grade Ent...
