  • Fall Harvest Potluck This Weekend At Banner County Fire Hall

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 26, 2023

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here is hoping you are having a great fall season and enjoying this beautiful weather. We will be finding less and less of that real soon, as beet harvest continues. We are sending our condolences to the family of George Jerred, who passed away recently and until a few years ago was a lifelong resident of Banner County. We would like to express sympathy also to the family of Jan Rundell, who has also passed away, another family connected to Banner County for many generations. Just as a...

  • Oh, No, The W-Man Said The 'S' Word

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 12, 2023

Good morning Banner County! Well first thing on Monday morning I heard the weatherman talk about what a great fall we have been having, even the weekends and then he up and said a bad four letter word.. Snow. No way am I ready for that, not for another 3 months. It was really beautiful this past weekend, perfect weather to visit the Adams Family Pumpkin Patch (or several other local pumpkin patches! ). Our elementary kids will be headed that way today, October 12th., the coldest day predicted for this week. As I write this I am hoping that the...

  • It's Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas?

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 5, 2023

Good morning and Happy October! Halloween and Christmas decorations are on sale everywhere. Are you ready? I myself am trying to get into the spirit of fall, my most favorite time of the year. However, this year it seems like summer got such a late start that it is ending much too soon. But as we all know, time marches on. So, did you head to Kimball for Farmers Day this past weekend? I was there for awhile, but not as much as I have been over the years. Hope you made it to at least some of the...

  • Andie West, Nathan Clements Crowned At Homecoming

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 28, 2023

Homecoming last weekend at Banner County High voted in Andie West as Queen and Nathan Clements as King, congratulations! And there is more sports this week starting tomorrow, September 28, with cross country at Bayard and an early out for the rest of the student body because . . . it is time for parent-teacher conferences! Those will take place between 2-5 p.m. and then again between 6-8 p.m. Child care is provided for those who need it during...

  • Flowerfield School Opens!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 7, 2023

Good morning and Happy September! Wow did we ever have rain this past Sunday. Puddles everywhere. Hopefully that will help with the next plantings. Did anyone make it to the Horizon Music Festival this past weekend? I was lucky enough to go for a while on Saturday and know the stage lights were still on Sunday, rain and all. I was just wondering if the full lineup of artists were able to perform. I sure hope so. What I did see was great and I hope this becomes an annual event. Here is another question for you: Do you know what the Honor Flight...

  • Local News Centers Around Harvest; Remembering John Jones

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 31, 2023

Good morning, Banner County, here is a little News, Notes and Nonsense. Local news is still centered around harvest as we are in need of rain for the next crop planting and the harvesting of the remaining summer crops. School, of course, has started and that means fall sports. Volleyball and football games got underway last week. The next county commissioners meeting is on Tuesday, September 5th at 8:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome. We are sorry to hear of the passing away of lifelong Banner County resident, John Jones. Our sympathy goes out to...

  • Living In The 'Gone Baby Gone' Category

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 24, 2023

Good morning, sure has heated up around these parts. We seem to be having June and July in August, which fits pretty well into the “Gone Baby Gone” category. Hard to believe September is just around the corner. Summer street markets are still going and some peaches are starting to show up. The 18th Street Market and the one in Morrill are open on Saturday mornings from 8 to 11 a.m. for Scottsbluff and until 2 p.m. in Morrill. The Gering Public Library will host the Chess Club tonight, August 24th, from 6:30-8 p.m.and they are having the fin...

  • School Starts; Flowerfield Begins Soon; Community Sale At Museum

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 17, 2023

Good morning! Boy, oh boy, has the summer flown by! Although it is the middle of August, I am going to push it for as long as I can. A few cooler days at the beginning of this week felt good but also gave us a little taste of what is to come. School has started this past week for most of us and that always changes the tempo for a lot of things. Somewhat of a less play and down to serious business attitude, maybe. Flowerfield School will begin before long, yeah! The folks in Alliance are gearing up for a Rubber Duck Draw with a 2024 Chevrolet Tr...

  • Be Careful Out There On The Roads This Harvest Season

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 10, 2023

Good morning, nice to have a few cooler days this week. The combines are still all over the place, some fields are finished and some have not started. Be careful out there, the roads are narrow and the harvest equipment is wide! I know of one fellow that went under a header because there was no where for either of the vehicles to go, so up and under! Fairs are coming to a close and boy have the rubber check races seen some bad luck this year. In Bridgeport a few weekends ago an accident with a horse, rider and hay bale was not good. The rider e...

  • Kimball Banner County Fair, New School Year Right Around The Corner

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 3, 2023

Holy Cow, August is here! The summer is sure flying for someone who is not having that much fun. Wheat harvest here in Banner County has looked pretty good, and in Scotts Bluff County, and Kimball, it has looked good at least in places. I recently road on a combine for a while and it sure was different than the last time I climbed those steps. There was no buddy seat and you had to drive. The cutting continues. Here at home, school starts soon, and the staff is due to be back on the 14th. So soon. There is a school board meeting on Monday, the...

  • Combines & Crews Try To Beat The Weather

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 27, 2023

Good morning! Harvest is getting underway, so please no more rain for just a little while. Although we all are so thankful for the rain, it sure would be nice to get a few of those crops in! More to follow soon, right? Combines and the crews with them have been putting in many long hours trying to beat the weather. Beginning this week, Thursday, July 27th three bands out of Colorado will play at the 18th Street Plaza between 6 - 9 p.m. Cory Pearman and Loop Story are both soft rock bands, and Float Like A Buffalo is a funk horn band. Not sure a...

  • Trombonist Isaac Olsen Performs In Europe; Wyatt Reichenberg A Champ

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 20, 2023

Good morning! Well summer is definitely here and isn’t it grand? Hot weather, weeds and all, I sure would rather have the heat to complain about instead of the cold! One of my very best friends would not agree with me at all and I understand, but for now I am happy with the heat, maybe in a month or so I will not be so much! Before we get into all of the things going on this next week I would like to congratulate Isaac Olsen on his recent experience with the Nebraska Ambassadors of Music Band and Choir. This group of 185 band members and 150 c...

  • Going Away BBQ For Pastor Bob On July 8

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 6, 2023

Good morning and here is hoping you had a blast on the 4th, celebrating our great country! I was with friends at the rodeo, something that my family has done for over 40 years, seldom missing an attendance on one night or the other. Many have been "doing" fireworks for several days and now that is over for another year, I am OK with that. We start off this week with lots of music in lots of different local areas. In Scottsbluff at the 18th Street Plaza the New Wave Machine and Loaded Dice will p...

  • Enjoy The Holiday, Family & Freedom

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 29, 2023

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! As we all are aware, our weather situation has been pretty violent with destructive rain, wind hail and tornadoes. Several times all at once. According to the weather forecast as of right now (Monday, June 26) we are clear until tonight and Friday. Time will tell, right? (Editor's note: As it turned out, parts of this area endured a tornado watch and hail Monday night.) There are a lot of things in the works for Thursday, June 29th, so lets hope...

Open swim has various hours – noon to 5 p.m. or 1 to 6 p.m. Plus there are lap and lesson schedules, so stop by and get the info you need to help you cool off. I know the heat is going to show up one of these days! Sidney had its Gold Rush Days celebration r...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 8, 2023

Good morning! With all of the rain that we have been having...Wow! Is it ever green out! I returned this past week from a short visit to the desert and all of the green was an awesome sight indeed. Maybe there will be a chance for some wheat harvest after all. Good morning Banner County, neighbors and friends near and far. Memorial weekend has come and gone, bringing typical cloudy wet weather with it. • Circle June 3 On Your Calender For Historical Day

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 25, 2023

Good morning! beautiful weather and lots of green, thanks to the rain. Here today I am sending off the last little news letter for the month of May and I can’t hardly believe it. Time is going way too fast when at the same time some days seem to go on forever. Anyway, school is out and baseball season is getting underway. I am trying to get my yard up to par and have transplanted a few trees and bushes. I will be potting more flowers because every year I get all excited and do it too early and they die before it really decides to stay warm. S...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 11, 2023

Good morning, beautiful May! We are so thankful for the recent rainfall. More is predicted over the next few days, so hopefully there will be more. This week is filled with school graduations and Mom’s Day. In honor of those moms, the Midwest Theater will be showing the movie “Mamma Mia!” over three days this weekend. Barb Cross, The Observer|May 4, 2023

Good morning, and happy May! I don't know about you, but I can not believe it is May already, I think I am about a month behind. Everyone is talking about school getting out, graduations and summer. About time for all of that, yet somehow I feel like it should be the 1st of April. One sure sign of the end of the year at the school house is the annual Spring concert. The pre-K through 12th grades will perform for you this Thursday, May 4th at 6 p.m. Art projects will be on display to view either before or after the concert also. The following da...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 27, 2023

Good morning! Good to see a few tractors in the fields and more getting ready! Beautiful weather we are having but still awfully dry. With the appearance of MAY, well I am thinking it won't be long before school will be out, seems crazy. Until that much awaited day , for some anyway, the students at Banner are keeping busy. The annual FFA Banquet is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, April 27th and I believe everyone is invited for a meal and a silent auction. Call the school at 436-7152 to make s...

  • Prom Season Is Here, And So Are Blue Skies ... At Least For Awhile

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 20, 2023

Good morning to you and yours. Beautiful clear blue skies here this morning, at least for awhile. The school students have been busy, as always. Today, April 20th, there is District Music at WNCC, an all-day event. Tomorrow through Sunday is the Gering high school performance of “Footloose!” Bet that is a good one. Maybe some of our music students will be able to take it in.
