Great weather brings out great showing at Best in the West

The Outstanding performance at the 2018 Best in the West Track and Field Meet should go to those who delayed the running of the meet one day to give the athletes, and fans, a chance to perform, and enjoy, excellent weather, instead of more wind and cold. The athletes showed their appreciation with some outstanding performances, none better than the boy's pole vault, where Mitchell's Justin Spencer won at 15'3" to better the previous meet record of 14'2" set by Brandon Childs of Torrington, back in 2007. Spencer was named Male Athlete of the meet, and Mitchell's, Jori Peters, was named the Female Athlete of the meet after winning 3 events.

Kimball had their own highlights with Hannah Biesecker winning the girl's long jump with a mark of 15'9" and Brady Kilgore won the 110 meter high hurdles with his time of 15.21, holding off Torrington's Bryan Lemmon at the tape with Lemmon's time, timed at 15.27. Medals were given to the top three individuals and top three relay teams. Kimball's Paycen Harroun, went to the medal stand in 2nd place in the boy's pole vault with his own very good vault of 13'0". On two attempts at 13'6", which would equal the Kimball High school record, he was over the bar, but knocked it off on the way down, or with his pole. Teammate, Jaden Mohr, also performed well, clearing 12'6" for 5th place and the same height as 4th place.

Other Kimball athletes who were honored by qualifying for the Best in the West, but failed to finish in the top six, were Megan Spicer in the long jump, Sam Bemis in the triple jump, Kilgore in the high jump and 300 hurdles, and the girl's 4x100 relay team of Biesecker, Bemis, Spicer and Jenna Greenwood.

Banner County High also reaped some honors as MaKenna Dahlgrin won the girl's shotput at 39'.05" and was 3rd in the discus at 112'8". Deven Sullivan missed the medal stand by one place, running 4th in the 3200 in 10:38.13, a great time for the young sophomore.

Potter-Dix had qualifiers in Trinity Langley in the high jump and Payge Hoffman in the long jump. All of the athletes who were Best in the West qualifiers should feel honored.
