Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The weather is still playing havoc with the area sports scheduling, but area school administrators have been moving events around and trying to get at least some of them held. I am to the point of wondering if it is even worth the time of listing events, as there is a good chance they will be moved.

That being said, Kimball will host a junior high track meet today (Thursday) beginning at 9 a.m. Kimball High will attend the George Calvert track meet in Morrill on Saturday (April 21), as it has been moved back from Friday. The Kimball High boy’s golf team will play at Scottsbluff on Monday (April 23) and the Best of the West track meet is set for Tuesday (April 24) at Scottsbluff Bearcat Stadium with a 4 p.m. start time.

I also have a schedule of golfing events that will be held at the Four Winds Golf Course this season, thanks to Four Winds Pro, Chad Wise. This might help with your plans.

May 3 is the Kimball High Invitational. May 15 is the District Tournament Kimball is hosting. June 16-17 is the Father’s Day 3-person Scramble. June 30 is Teammates. July 2 is Senior Men. July 7-8 Vince’s Corner Tournament. July 14 Glow Ball. July 23 Senior Women. August 4 Kimball Hospital Foundation. September 2 a four-person scramble. September 8-9 a 1-person scramble. September 3 High School Girls golf. October 14 Triple play tournament.

Pat O’Brien is putting out the word that the Four Winds Men’s Golf League play will begin the first week in June, so you need to get signed up soon. A combined Men’s League scramble will be held May 13th at 1 p.m. If interested, call Pat at 235-5009.

Also, if anyone not playing in a league who would like to have a GHIN handicap, you can do so by calling Pat before May 15 at the above listed phone number.

By the way, I want to inform all of you readers who have been asking if Pat is leaving Nebraska, that is a different Pat O’Brien who was a member of the Nebraska Football Team. Our Pat O’Brien is staying right here!

A rather strange happening at the WTC Track meet this past week concerning the pole vault. Kimball’s Paycen Harroun, had a great day in winning the boy’s vault with a new personal height record of 13’0”, but at one time he thought he had tied the school record of 13’6” and even moved the bar up for 3 attempts at what he thought was 13’7” to better the school record. When all was said and done, the person managing the event said “We have a problem.” Seems they had been measuring from the bottom of the plant hole, instead of from the top at ground level, and all marks were off by 6 inches! Talk about a let down!

Also, a note of sympathy going out to Hannah Biesecker, who was all set to establish a new school long jump record at the WTC meet and scratched all 3 prelim jumps! It happens.
