Kimball freshman, Sam Bemis, leans at the tape to win the 100 meter dash with her time of 14.10. Amber Abrams of Pine Bluffs ran 2nd in 14.40, and Kimball freshman, Megan Spicer, was 3rd in 14.60, the same time given Hemingford's Makenzy Chancellor.

The Pine Bluffs Hornets captured the team championship in both the boys and girls divisions at Saturday's Kimball Track and Field Invitational, with Kimball runnerup in both divisions.
In the boy's division, Pine Bluffs amassed 206 points with Kimball a distant 2nd with 134, followed by Hemingford with 71, Minatare 58, Potter-Dix 25 and Banner County 18.
In the girl's division, the Lady Hornets won with 174 points, Kimball had 88, Hemingford 87, Potter-Dix 76, Banner County 47 and Minatare 24.
Two new meet records were established, both in the boy's division, and both by Kimball athletes. Brady Kilgore, shown at right, set a new record in the 110 meter high hurdles, winning with a time of 15.9 to better the old mark of 16.14 held by Drew Gilliland of Mitchell set in 2014. Paycen Harroun set the other new record in the pole vault of 12'6" to improve on the old record of 12'0" set by Kimball's Trent Rutledge in 2015.
It was an all around gold medal-type day for Kilgore, as the talented junior also won the 300 hurdles in 45.20, won the high jump at 5'10" and finished 2nd in the long jump at 18'0.75".
The boy's pole vault is one of the strong events for Coach Gene Mohr, as the Longhorns swept the top 3 places with Harroun winning at 12'6", Jaden Mohr 2nd at 12'0", and freshman, Ethan Ratzlaff, 3rd at 10'6".
Brayden Tyan, a sophomore, won the triple jump at 35'7.75", was 4th in the long jump at 17'1.75" and teamed up with Jake Jenkins, Colton Mielke and Byron Rowley to run 2nd in the 4x100 relay with a time of 48.50. Corey Travis got the Horns some points in the throws, taking 5th in the discus at 112'3" and 6th in the shot put at 39'11.5".
Kimball had some sprint speed this year with Byron Rowley running 2nd in the 100 meter dash in 12.40 and Jake Jenkins 5th in this event at 12.80. Jenkins also ran 6th in the 200 in 27.0. In the longer races, Nicholas Thomas-Lewis ran 4th in the 400 meter run in 57.80, Sam Cajero was 4th in the 800 in 2:34.5, and Connor Cluff was 5th in the 1600 in 6:13.10.
The Horns placed in all of the relay events finishing 2nd in the 4x800 relay in 10:17.90 with Sam Cajero, Thomas Lenzen, Kaleb Prather and Nicholas Thomas-Lewis doing the hand-offs. The 4x400 relay team of Thomas-Lewis, Cajero, Cluff and Devin Gardner ran 4th in 4:29.60.
Colton Mielke ran 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 20.60. Byron Rowley was 3rd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.80 and he was also 5th in the high jump at 5'2".
BEMIS A STAND-OUT FOR Kimball GIRLS:
Samantha Bemis had an outstanding day in her first high school meet as the talented young freshman won the 100 meter dash in 14.10, won the triple jump at 32'7.50", was 5th in the pole vault at 7'6" and teamed up with Megan Spicer, Jenna Greenwood, and Carli Wurdeman, shown at left, to win the 4x100 relay in 56.60. Miss Bemis took home 3 golds and a 5th place medal.
That winning 4x100 relay team was made up of 2 freshman and 2 sophomore runners, showing the Kimball girls has some young talent. Jenna Greenwood, a sophomore, was 3rd in the high jump at 4'4" and 3rd in the triple jump at 31'8.5". Megan Spicer, a freshman, was 5th in the triple jump at 30'8.25 and 6th in the long jump at 12'6.5" and ran 3rd in the 100 meter dash in 14.60. Also on the track, freshman, Sydney Biesecker, ran 3rd in the 1600 in 7:01.8 and Madison Wynne was 4th in the 400 in 1:15.80.
Hannah Biesecker won the long jump, as expected, with a best leap of 15'8.25", but pulled a quad muscle in doing so and ended her competition in other events for the day. Her availability for this week is questionable. Kennedy Lewis ran 5th in the 300 hurdles in 1:08.20 and was 6th in the pole vault at 7'0".
In the throws, Carli Wurdeman was 3rd in the discus at 95'4", with Emma Martin 6th at 76'7.5". Bailie Brower was 4th in the shot put at 27'4.5" and Martin was 6th at 26'4.5".
Coach Gene Mohr was pleased with his team's performance other than he said, " I would like to get more scoring from our boys in the throws." Kimball is scheduled to compete in the Bayard C-D meet today (Thursday, March 29), with a start time of 9 a.m.
