Vernon L. Oeltjen

Vernon L. Oeltjen, 78, died at the Kimball Health Services on Friday, February 2, 2018. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Park Terrace Community Center at 1401 E. 4th Street in Kimball. Friends may visit http://www.cantrellfh.com to view Vern's Tribute Wall and leave messages and stories for the family. Inurnment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Potter Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family. The cremation and burial arrangements have been entrusted to Cantrell Funeral Home.

Vernon Lee Oeltjen was born in Sidney, Nebraska on July 30, 1939, the son of Anton and Bessie (Slama) Oeltjen. He was raised in Potter and attended and graduated from the Potter High School in 1957. He was married to Della Mae Rehmer in Gurley, Nebraska. They moved to Scottsbluff and Vern worked for a mental health center as their maintenance director, he also worked at the Scottsbluff Bakery for a short time. The family lived in Scottsbluff until moving to Kimball in 2000. He loved music and enjoyed listening to country and rock-a-billy. He loved animals and always had many dogs throughout his life. Vern always enjoyed trips with his family to Nashville every year. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his daughters Lori Mae Oeltjen of Kimball, NE., and Wanda (Bret) Whartman of Sidney, NE; grandchildren Karisa (Mike) Murdock and Shane (Kayla) Bartling; great grandchildren Zach Murdock, Nolan Murdock, Thea Simbeck and Katie Bartling. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Ray Smith and Delmar Oeltjen and sister Betty Johnson.
