Annual event is ready to grow with new leadership/same old charm

Jowain Sherman looks forward to taking a break

The Annual Ribs and More Cook Off will continue this summer, but will be guided by different hands.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 24, Jowain Sherman, accompanied by members of the community, met with members of the James L. Eatmon Lodge and members of Kimball’s VFW Post #2243 to discuss who would take the reins of this community favorite.

Sherman, who has led this event for more than a decade, has always ensured the proceeds are given to a charity of some sort, and his biggest fear of letting the event go is that the money will not go to a charity.

With those doubts in mind the two organizations interested in leading the event reassured Sherman that a portion of the proceeds would go to a charity as in the past.

VFW members, and Masons alike, also assured him that, while changes would be made, those changes aren’t due to poor outcomes in the past, but rather to take what Sherman built and grow it into an event that will draw more out-of-town competitors and publicity throughout the region.

Those changes could include adding categories for different kinds of meat or adding a live band and a beer garden.

Though few decisions have been made, Sherman concluded that he is ready to hand the event over so he can enjoy his time cooking and visiting with other folks.

Look to the Observer for more information as time nears for the Annual Ribs and More Cook Off, start trying out some new recipes and prepare to take on other great cooks once again this summer!
